As you'd expect with such a massive show, this year's Oscars had some of the biggest names in the business in attendance.

It wasn't just actors though, as the likes of Lady Gaga and Rihanna were also in attendance and performed at the 95th edition of the Academy Awards.

However, one famous face that was missing was Tom Cruise, despite appearing in one of the biggest films last year.

Top Gun: Maverick grossed close to $1.5 billion, and during last night's Oscars, Maverick picked up the gong for Best Sound, while it was nominated for best picture, best adapted screenplay, best original song, best film editing and best visual effects.

While the latest Top Gun only picked up one of the six awards it was nominated for, it has been widely credited as being the first big-budget film to bring fans back to the cinema since Covid.

As Cruise was a producer on Top Gun: Maverick, he was nominated in the Best Picture category alongside the likes of Christopher McQuarrie, David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer.

But as fans tuned in to see some of their favorite celebs walk the red carpet, many pointed out that Cruise was nowhere to be seen.

So why exactly was he not at the biggest film awards show? Well, it turns out that Cruise was too busy filming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part II in Europe, a representative for the actor confirmed.

However, Cruise was prepared to accept the award for best picture over video link, which instead went to Everything Everywhere All At Once.

But it sounds like Cruise is having a lot of fun filming the eighth and final instalment of Mission: Impossible, with him previously teasing a stunt that involved jumping a motorcycle off of a clip.

While he may not have appeared in person, there was no chance Cruise was not going to be mentioned at some point during last night's ceremony. It was as likely as the Will Smith, Chris Rock slap cropping up, surely?

At the top of the show, host Jimmy Kimmel said: "Everyone loved Top Gun, everyone.

"Tom Cruise with his shirt off in that beach football scene? L. Ron Hubba Hubba!"

After parachuting into the venue as part of a Top Gun skit, Kimmel continued: "Tom and James Cameron didn’t show up tonight.
