HBO Max has a sizzle reel of its most anticipated series for 2023, including a first look at the long-awaited fourth season of True Detective starring Jodie Foster.

In the foreboding clip, we see Foster as her character Liz Danvers who mentions that an unnamed man has been missing for 48 hours.

While we don’t know much about the crime Danvers is investigating, it's enough to get us excited for the new season.

In May, it was confirmed that the two-time Academy Award-winner would be back on the small screen.

The Silence of the Lambs star also executive produces the series, which comes from writer and director Issa López and executive producer Barry Jenkins.

This season will focus detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro, played by actor and boxer Kali Reis.

Set in Alaska, the duo will investigate an unusual missing person’s case in which the six men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace.

According to the season’s official plot description, both detectives will have to confront their own darkness to dig into the truths behind the crime and town.

The fourth season also stars John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc and Joel D. Montgrand.

Season one debuted on the American cable network HBO in 2014 and starred Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts and Tory Kittles.

Set in Louisiana, the first season followed a pair of Louisiana State Police detectives as they pursue a serial killer over a 17-year period who has links to the occult.

The first season earned acclaim from critics and high ratings for HBO. It won numerous awards acting, particularly for its acting, cinematography, writing and direction.

McConaughey won the Best Actor in a Drama Series award at the 2014 Critics’ Choice Television Awards for his role as Detective Rustin “Rust” Cohle.

Season two – which received mixed reviews - aired in 2015 and starred Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly and Vince Vaughn.

The setting was moved to California and centered on three detectives from cooperating police departments as they investigated crimes thought to be related to the murder of a corrupt politician.

The third and most recent season – which had a more positive critical reception - aired in 2019, starring Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy and Ray Fisher and was set in the Ozarks.

Season three took place over three separate time periods as a pair of Arkansas State Police detectives attempt to solve a missing children’s case.

The HBO sizzle reel also features teasers for the post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us, The Weeknd’s upcoming pop star drama The Idol and the new seasons of Perry Mason, Succession and Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.
