Tom Cruise had an interesting response after President Donald Trump proposed 100 percent tariffs on movies made outside of the US.

Last week, Trump revealed he is planning to impose 100 per cent tariffs on movies made in foreign countries to protect US-made projects.

Trump wrote on Truth Social: "The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated."

Calling it a 'concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat', Trump went on to claim that there is also 'propaganda' within the movies' messaging.

So, to tackle this 'threat', he is 'authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands'.

Ending his post, he stated: “WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”

Trump did not elaborate on whether he would also impose tariffs on American production companies producing films abroad.

Days on from the comment and Cruise responded to the potential tariffs, at a press conference for Mission: Impossible - Final Reckoning in Seoul.

When asked whether the movie had been subject to any tariffs and how much of it had been shot overseas, Cruise responded: "We'd rather answer questions about the movie. Thanks."

The moderator at the event called Cruise's answer to the question, 'fair'.

"I think that's a fair answer, alright, can we move on to the next question please," she said.

People were quick to respond to Cruise avoiding the question, with one person writing on X: "Someone at the Seoul press conference for The Final Reckoning asked if the movie falls under Trump’s foreign productions tariffs and Cruise moved it along without answering lmao."

While another said: "That's why tom is the Goat. He didn't take bait."

What have other actors said about the tariffs?

There's been a mixed response to Trump's plans, but a few actors have spoken out about the potential changes.

For example, Succession actor Brian Cox described the idea as a 'disaster', telling the Guardian: “[Trump is] not really understanding the point of view of how films are made, and what films cost, [how] the cost of films [has] gone up and the cost of films in America went up considerably... It’s a kind of nonsense and a divine ignorance on all their parts.”

Meanwhile, Paul W Fleming of the British actors' union Equity, added: “A lot of the panic over the past 24 hours is due to the fragility in the system. This can be addressed positively through properly funding our public service broadcasters and ensuring an attractive and fair tax and investment environment for studios and production.”

Meanwhile, Jon Voight said to Variety: “Something has to be done, and it’s way past time," adding: “How about enthusiasm and gratitude?”

Following his Truth Social post, Trump later told reporters that he was going to 'meet with the industry' to 'make sure they're happy'.
