The Super Mario Bros. Movie is about to become the highest-grossing video-game-to film adaptation of all time.

We sort of of didn't expect this - no offence intended, Nintendo - after Chris Pratt was widely panned for not even attempting an accent to play the iconic Italian plumber.

But obviously fans have been able to put that aside as nerds, kids, and former kids have rushed into cinemas to snap up tickets to see the beloved Nintendo character come to life on screen.

Fans in the America alone spent USD$31 million on movie tickets.

And the animated flick has kept that momentum going on US soil.

The domestic box office came in at USD $26 million on Thursday and USD$55 million on its first Friday.

But there were no signs of the numbers slowing down, shattering multiple records as it closes in on USD$204 million in domestic screenings.

Not bad if you ask us.

It also makes The Super Mario Bros. Movie the biggest opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation.

Now coming in second place is Warcraft’s paltry USD$210 million debut.

But that is not the only place in which the Universal film has upped the stakes.

At the global box office the animated video game adaptation has already passed the USD$400 million mark worldwide in a week.

Tallied with the domestic box office figures and an additional $194 million coming in from cinemas abroad markets, the movie now sits at grand global total of USD$434 million.
