Selena Gomez has responded to the 'uncomfortable' kiss her character shared with Cara Delevinge's in Only Murders In The Building.

In the latest episode of Only Murders In The Building there was a moment where Selena Gomez's character Mabel locked lips with new love interest Alice (Cara Delevinge).

It came after a point where Alice encouraged Mabel to smash up some of her artwork to let her emotions out, one thing led to another and the pair ended up kissing.

However, the kiss has come in for some criticism as plenty have slated it as an 'uncomfortable' moment on their screens.

Some fans took to social media to air their critiques of the couple's kissing technique, with one person writing it was 'the most awkward & uncomfortable kiss' they'd ever seen.

Another wrote that there seemed to be 'no chemistry' in the kiss, which is going to be a problem if Mabel and Alice are going to be love interests this season.

Someone else said they thought the episode was 'so excellent' but 'wasn't keen on Selene and Cara Delevingne's kiss', though insisted they were happy to move past it.

To be honest as kisses go it is quite uncomfortable, for much of the scene Gomez is just standing there awkwardly barely moving and putting very little passion into the kiss.

So I’m watching the first two episodes of season 2 of Only Murders In The Building and I just watched Selena Gomez and Cara Delevingne have the most awkward & uncomfortable kiss I think I’ve ever seen. Which is weird because didn’t them broads actually date at one point?

Gomez has now explained that the kiss is supposed to be uncomfortable as she's 'not quite sure' about her character's sexuality and she doesn't 'think Mabel knows either'.

Describing Mabel as 'so repressed, sexually' the star explained that the character 'has great difficulty with intimacy'.

With that in mind it makes plenty of sense that she'd go in for a kiss during an emotional moment only to freeze up during it and just stand there awkwardly.

Talking about Mabel's struggles with her mental health and no longer letting her traumatic experiences define her, Gomez said she 'really enjoyed exploring those nuances' of the character.

don't be mad at me but all i wanted was to see selena gomez kiss a girl but that kiss in only murders in the building made me feel uncomfortable... there was no chemistry and it looked like they were not really into it? idk

Besides, it's only the second episode in the season, there's eight more to go and plenty of opportunities for Mabel and Alice's relationship to grow and develop.

If Gomez's character was meant to be awkward and uncomfortable in the scene then starting off a new relationship with an uncomfortable kiss was very fitting.

Besides, behind the cameras Gomez is very good friends with Delevingne and the pair even have matching rose tattoos.

Only Murders In The Building has attracted rave reviews since the first season released on Hulu and Disney+.

Gomez has been picking up individual plaudits for her performance too, she won a People's Choice Award for the comedy TV star of 2021 for her part in the series.

Only Murders In The Building is streaming now on Disney+.
