Patrick Stewart has become the latest actor forced into Marvel's web of not-very-convincing lies, as he breaks his silence for the first time since seemingly appearing in the trailer for the upcoming Doctor Strange movie.
During the Super Bowl fans were shocked and delighted to hear what seems pretty unmistakably to be Stewart's distinctive voice during the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
His rumoured appearance as the iconic Professor X was teased midway through the trailer, when a distinctive bald head could be seen appearing in front of Benedict Cumberbatch's sorcerer superhero as a very familiar voice said 'we should tell him the truth'.

Marvel hasn't officially confirmed anything, and it would be one huge fake out if it turned out to be someone other than the legendary X-Men elder statesman, but that hasn't stopped Stewart from going full Andrew Garfield when asked about his apparent involvement in the film.
Speaking to ComicBook, Stewart appeared to flat out deny that it was him in the trailer, saying, 'You know, people have been imitating my voice ever since I came on the stage 60 years ago. So, I can't be held responsible for that.'

As much as absolutely no one is going to buy that response, Stewart went on to claim that while he had previously discussed reprising his role with Marvel boss Kevin Feige, he'd ultimately decided his character's story line in Logan was the perfect way for him to bow out.
'Here's the problem... If we had not made Logan, then yes, I would probably be ready to get into that wheelchair one more time and be Charles Xavier. But Logan changed all that,' he said.
Stewart went on to explain he had a 'very emotional' reaction to his character's death scene in Logan, revealing he'd 'let it out' during the film's premiere at the Berlin Film Festival after noticing Hugh Jackman 'wipe away a tear' during the tender moment between Xavier and Wolverine.

As touching as that anecdote is, most fans probably won't be any less convinced that Professor X is set to show up at some point in Doctor Strange, with one popular theory suggesting the character will be a version who is part of a shadowy multiverse organisation called the Illuminati.
Regardless of Stewart's denials, we'll find out the truth when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits cinemas on May 5.
