Selena Gomez has been slammed online for 'taking break' from social media and returning to the online world just days later.

The singer is one of the most followed celebrities online, showing the level of interest a lot of people have in the 31-year-old.

So it came as a disappointment to many last week when Gomez announced she would be taking a break from her social media accounts.

Taking to Instagram on 30 October, she said 'all of the horror, hate, violence and terror that’s going on in the world' was the reason she decided to take a step back.

Gomez wrote: "I’ve been taking a break from social media because my heart breaks to see all of the horror, hate, violence and terror that’s going on in the world.

"People being tortured and killed or any act of hate towards any group is horrific."

In what seemed like a parting message, the star encouraged her followers to protect each other while she reiterated her desire for all violence to end.

"We need to protect ALL people, especially children and stop the violence for good," she added.

"I’m sorry if my words will never be enough for anyone or a hashtag. I just can’t stand by innocent people getting hurt. That makes me sick. I wish I could change the world. But a post won’t."

The message concluded with: "Love, Selena."

Well, Gomez's social media hiatus didn't exactly last long, as she has posted on her Instagram Story in the last 24 hours.

In the Stories, Gomez posed with some restaurant workers while holding a plate of food.

While the post is all rather innocence, many people have criticized Gomez for returning so soon after saying she'd be taking a break.

The move is being discussed on Reddit, with one user asking: "Selena is back after taking some time off social media… mmmm what was that like two days?"

Gomez recently posted on her Instagram Story.

Someone else wrote: "I wanna believe that if I dramatically suggested I’d be taking a social media break, I’d at LEAST give myself a month before bringing my sorry a** back."

Meanwhile, another added: "She needs to create a close friends story or secret account so she can at least act like she’s taking a break to the public."
