Viewers left sobbing after watching ‘tragic’ death scene in 10/10 ‘must watch’ show

Warning: this article contains spoilers for The Rookie

Arguably, Game of Thrones is the king of main character deaths in a TV show, but this popular cop series appears to be giving it a run for its money.

The Rookie first dropped in 2018 and fans of the show are still raving about it to this day.

It boasts several famous faces in the series including The Suicide Squad's Nathan Fillion and, in later seasons, Jenna Dewan.

The series' synopsis reads, as per IMDb: "Starting over isn't easy, especially for John Nolan [Fillion] who, after a life-altering incident, is pursuing his dream of joining the LAPD. As their oldest rookie, he's met with skepticism from those who see him as just a walking midlife crisis."

The Rookie is based on the premise that the LAPD is one of the few police forces in the US to accept new recruits over the age of 37.

While it's been out for several years (with its next season set for release in 2025), people are still loving it.

"Am on the last season, I don’t want it to end," one person recently penned on social media.

"The Rookie is one of the better cop shows on tv right now," said another person on IMDb last year.

"I have to say I've really enjoyed The Rookie even more than I though I would," raved a third.

But those who have watched the show will know of a heartbreaking moment in the first season that would make even the hardiest of people shed a tear.

And - spoiler alert - that's the death of Captain Zoe Andersen.

It's not very often that main characters are killed off in the first season, if at all, so it's safe to say fans were shaken to the very core when Andersen was shot in the neck by a gang that took her and Officer Nolan hostage.

While there have been another five seasons since Andersen's unexpected death, fans are still getting over it.

See the devastating moment here:

Taking to a Reddit thread dedicated to The Rookie, one viewer said last year: "I am still not over Captain Andersen’s death! It has been so many seasons already, and I still hate it. Even when I do The Rookie rewatches, I always skip over her last scenes where she is killed.

"There have been plenty of characters that I’ve loved that have been killed off on tv shows/movies. I am able to rewatch those with no issue. For some reason, the Captain’s death is one that i just hate to see again."

It gets like that sometimes.

Labelling Andersen as 'probably one the most well written female leader characters I have ever seen in any show', another The Rookie fan said her death left them 'heartbroken'.

"Andersen went out like a badass," said someone else on YouTube. "I was not expecting any of that. It broke me for sure."

All six seasons of The Rookie are available to stream on Hulu.
