The age-old question - what can fill the hole left behind by Game of Thrones?

Alright well it's not been an age since the hit HBO series came to an end, but it has been five years.

Well, don't worry, as fans believe they've found an even better show to fill that Westeros-shaped hole in our lives.

And the best part about it? It's easily accessible on Netflix and has five seasons, running from 2015 until 2022 - so you can really sink your teeth in.

Enter The Last Kingdom, the Game of Thrones-esque series that viewers believe can rival the epic show - with some even staking that it is better than anything to come from the fictional land of Westeros.

Originally airing on UK screens through the BBC, it gained such popularity that a movie was even created by Netflix, titled The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die.

Unlike Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, The Last Kingdom is set in the final years of the 9th century and runs into the first couple years of the 10th, in Anglo-Saxon England.

It covers the conflict between England and Denmark as viking warlords land on the English coast.

The series received a huge 8.5 rating on IMDb, and received its fair share of plaudits on Twitter.

Taking to the social media platform, one user posted: "The Last Kingdom. Extremely captivating from its soundtrack to its staging in battle through history, everything in general is transmitted in an impressive way, this season has been really moving and for me it is one of the best series in history.

    "Masterpiece 10/10"

One person replied: "Very captivating the plot, the music , the acting, the fight scenes nothing is neglected to bring forth an important historical saga on a grand scale but it’s also the little details which are telling.

"No character is ever completely forgotten, loved so many especially #uthred."

And it didn't take long before people compared it to HBO's epic series.

Someone commented: "I love this whole Series. I have already watched 3x.

"I can't find any other series like Last Kingdom.

"It has out ranked Outlander,Vikings, Game of Thrones, Reign..."

And it didn't stop there, fans rushed to the platform to support the show.

One person wrote: "LOVED The Last Kingdom. So well done. Better than Game of Thrones hands down. The finish of the series was satisfying and true to each character's arc."

While another user posted: "Make no mistake this series as a whole is better than game of thrones imo. Game of thrones had some good seasons but the last few were poor, rushed or just boring.

"There were some good individual episodes in that though."

I think labelling Game of Thrones as 'boring' is a bit of a stretch, personally I loved the show, but while I don't think The Last Kingdom does enough to overtake it in my estimations - it is still an epic and a must-watch.
