Viewers of Netflix's new rom-com Players have spotted what they think is a hidden Easter egg in the movie.

Picking up on hidden references in movies can be a lot of fun.

For example, in Edgar Wright and Jessica Hynes' series Spaced, main character Tim Bisley (Simon Pegg) hates Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

So it's rather fitting that his in-show nemesis is played by none other than the voice of Darth Maul Peter Serafinowicz, who even says the line 'at last I shall have revenge'.

Now, viewers of Netflix's new rom-com Players have spotted what they think is a cheeky reference hidden in plain sight.

The movie follows a successful New York writer, Mack, played by Gina Rodriguez, as she inadvertently falls for a hook-up, in the form of the dashing Nick, played by Tom Ellis.

One section sees Mack's friends doing background research on the dashing Nick to find out more about him, and it's in this section that we see the Easter egg.

Mack's friend is spotted sitting on the toilet reading a book by Nick, presumably to find out what kind of author he is.

But it's the title of the book that has drawn people's attention.

So, what's the book called?

Well, it's called The Devil's Den.

So why is that an Easter egg? Well, viewers think that it could be a sneaky reference to Tom Ellis' previous role as none other than the Devil himself in Lucifer, which has six seasons on Netflix.

One viewer tweeted: "Who else giggled when they saw the title of Nick’s book? Please tell me this was your idea."

'Nick' is also a pretty pointed choice of name when it comes to devil-references, what with 'Old Nick' being one of the many nicknames given to Satan.

Ellis got his breakout role on the UK sitcom Miranda, which ran from 2010 and 2015, playing the heartthrob chef Gary.

He also had roles in the fantasy drama Merlin, as well as sketch show The Catherine Tate Show.

Ellis landed the lead role in the Netflix series Lucifer, where he played the title role in 2016.

Lucifer went on to run for six seasons, from 2016 until 2021.

Ellis has since taken on a part in the new Hulu series Tell Me Lies, which follows a couple over eight years after they meet in college.

Players is available to stream on Netflix now.
