Morbius Receives Shocking Reviews And One Of The Worst Rotten Tomatoes Scores

Sony's vampiric Spider-Man spinoff isn't going down well with audiences.

Morbius, Jared Leto’s Spider-Man spin-off, has opened to shocking reviews with the film earning a terrible Rotten Tomatoes score.

Dropping in UK cinemas today (March 31) and then the US tomorrow (April 1), the film is Sony's latest attempt at building a Spider-Man cinematic universe without the Webslinger present.

The plot follows the titular enigmatic antihero Michael Morbius (Leto), a biochemist who is battling a rare blood disease that gives him vampiric superpowers.

While some were hoping director Daniel Espinosa’s efforts would honour the source material, early reviews suggest the film is a flop – so much so that critics have scored it just 20 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

One of those who slammed Morbius is Escape Film Club, who wrote on Twitter: “Morbius proves that no matter how many famous faces or shiny visuals you squeeze in, Sony will always find a way to impressively misunderstand basic storytelling.”

Movie writer Brandon Davis tweeted: “Morbius just isn’t very good. Parts of it, some creative action or horror-ish sequences are actually cool… but the story feels flat, simple, messy, and dated.”

Entertainment reporter Sab Astley added: “Well, #Morbius is about as bad as you were expecting. A 2005 plot collides with visually confusing CGI to create a bit of a snooze fest. But don't worry, they've saved the worst for last. Featuring some of the worst post credits scenes you've EVER seen, Sony are off their rocker.”

One of the biggest talking points was the post-credit scenes, and while we don’t want to give away any spoilers, we can say the critics aren’t too happy with how things played out. While many were hoping the scenes would provide some clarity on the future of Sony’s Spiderverse, if anything they leave fans with even more questions.

Speaking on the matter, superhero movie YouTuber Justin wrote: “After seeing those #Morbius post-credit scenes, consider this a petition for Andrew Garfield to no longer be the Spider-Man of the Sony Spider-Man Universe. The dude deserves so much better and it is crystal clear that Sony has no idea what they're f**king doing with the SSMU.”

While it’s too soon to say all hope is lost for the movie, judging by the wave of angry reactions it seems unlikely Morbius will follow in the footsteps of Venom, a film that, despite opening to terrible reviews, ended up doing well with the audiences who praised the elements the critics didn't like. Time will tell.
