It took more than thirty years to get a sequel to the epic '80s movie Top Gun, but just weeks after its release Miles Teller has revealed Tom Cruise's plans regarding a third instalment.

Given that Top Gun: Maverick quickly became the biggest film in the world as well as being Cruise's first movie to gross more than a billion dollars at the global box office, it's only natural that those involved would think about making another film to follow the successful sequel.

The film landed in cinemas on 27 May, 38 years after Maverick first blasted on to the big screen in the original 1986 film, and saw the pilot return to Top Gun to train a younger generation of fighter pilots, including the son of his late friend, Goose.

Teller made his first appearance in the franchise this year as Goose's son, who used the call sign Rooster, but he made clear he's interested in returning to the role during an interview with Entertainment Tonight released this week.

Discussing his potential return to the world of Top Gun, Teller said: "That would be great, but that's all up to TC. It's all up to Tom."

The Whiplash star went on to reveal he'd been 'having some conversations' with Cruise about the possibility of creating a third movie, adding: "We'll see."

Teller also noted that $1 billion milestone achieved by the film was being utilised in discussions about a new movie, saying: "That's definitely what my team has been saying for these future negotiations."

Whether Maverick and Rooster return or not, though, Teller said he and Cruise now have a strong relationship, so much so that Teller just recently sent Cruise a message for his birthday.

Teller stars as Goose's son, Rooster in the Top Gun sequel.

The actor added he was grateful to have been involved in the sequel to a movie that remains beloved by fans even decades later, saying: "For him to share Top Gun with me and a lot of these other young actors it's just been such a wild ride, and it's still going."

His excitement about the work is clearly a lasting one, as he previously told Entertainment Tonight that being involved with Top Gun: Maverick had 'been awesome', adding: "I've never really experienced something like this in my life... It's a really good feeling."

I'm sure there's a lot of fans who would be more than happy to hear Teller was back in the role of Rooster for a third Top Gun film, but after the success of both the first and second movies, it would certainly have big boots to fill.
