Martin Scorsese was met with a nine-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival where his film, Killers of the Flower Moon, had its highly anticipated world premiere.

The director couldn't help but get a little bit emotional when he spoke to the adoring crowd at the end of the 3 hour and 26 minute film.

Killers of the Flower Moon, which stars Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Lily Gladstone was based on the book of the same name by journalist David Grann, about the infamous Osage murders.

Set in the 1920s, it follows the FBI investigation into the murders of a Native American tribe in Osage County, Oklahoma, after oil is found on their land.

The film tells the true story of the 'Reign of Terror' killings through the romantic plot between Ernest Burkhart (DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Gladstone).

It also stars Brendan Fraser, Jesse Plemons, and John Lithgow.

The build-up to the film's world premiere had been unbearably exciting, with film buffs dying to sink their teeth into Scorsese's latest project - no matter how long its run time was.

When the film finished and the credits rolled inside the Grande Theatre Lumiere at Cannes Film Festival, Martin Scorsese walked in to greet the audience.

The director looked immensely grateful and a little bit emotional as he reacted to the applause, thanking the crowd over and over again.

Speaking to them after the lengthy standing ovation finally died down, Scorsese said: “It’s taken its time to come around, but Apple did so great by us, shooting out there … there was lots of grass - I’m a New Yorker.

"We also lived in that world with the Osage, we really did, and we really miss it."

Reacting to the audience's hearty applause, he added: "I don’t think I’ve ever experienced [anything] like this."

Although those who were lucky enough to catch the film at Cannes haven't given too much away just yet, it sounds like Killers of the Flower Moon is going to be a massive hit.

The film debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with an impressive score of 96 per cent.

Not too shabby, Martin! That's got to be an Oscar's contender, right?

The Apple TV Original Films project is set for theatrical release this October, before it makes its global streaming debut on Apple TV+.

Until then, we've at least got a brand teaser trailer to keep us going.
