Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 has broken an unusual record that was previously held by the 2000 Christmas classic The Grinch.

The third instalment of the superhero franchise doesn’t land in cinemas until next May, but has already claimed itself a title.

It’s all thanks to the makeup department, and with Drax, Nebula, and Mantis all regularly sharing screen space, it’s easy to see how the crew managed to set a new record.

Director James Gunn took to Twitter to reveal that the flick has earned the world record for ‘the most make-up appliances created for a single production’.

He wrote: “Just heard from our make-up folks at Legacy Effects that yesterday Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 officially passed the World Record for the most makeup appliances created for a single production (surpassing The Grinch). Congrats, guys! Thanks for keeping practical effects alive!”

Gunn has previously revealed that the third – and most likely final – movie in the series will be ‘very different’ from the first two.

Speaking to UNILAD, Gunn said: "We’re swinging for the fences with Vol. 3. It’s enormous and very different from the first two movies, and so we’ll just have to see if audiences embrace it. It’s going to be bold, that’s for sure."

And while you’ve got just over a year until you’ll finally get to see the third movie, there’s a holiday special on its way.

"We’re also working on the Holiday Special, which I think is probably the greatest thing ever," added Gunn.

"And that’s going to be out at the end of the year, so it’s not that far away."

Last year, the director revealed that Vol. 3 will be his last Guardians film while speaking to UNILAD about the release of The Suicide Squad.

"It’s the end of my run on Guardians, as I see it. It’s the end of Dave’s run," he said. "It’s really telling the story… we’re getting a lot more on the story of Rocket and who Rocket is. He’s the character I feel closest to… that’s what it is."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is due for release on May 5, 2023.
