The third season of Bill Hader's HBO series Barry has come to its dramatic close, and viewers have been blown away.

The dark comedy thriller - created by and starring Hader - has been heaped with praise by fans and critics alike, earning itself a pretty ridiculous 99 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The third series' finale has just aired, but there's another one in the pipeline, so if you haven't watched it yet you may want to seriously consider going back to the start and getting up to speed in time for season four.

The show sees Hader take on the role of titular character Barry Berkman, a hitman who stumbles into the world of acting.

The synopsis reads: "Barry is a dark comedy starring Bill Hader as a depressed, low-rent hitman from the Midwest.

"Lonely and dissatisfied in his life, he reluctantly travels to Los Angeles to execute a hit on an aspiring actor.

"Barry follows his 'mark into an acting class and ends up finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the LA theatre scene. He wants to start a new life as an actor, but his criminal past won't let him walk away —can he find a way to balance both worlds?"

From this premise, Hader has been heaped with plaudits for his writing, directing and acting; indeed, he has won consecutive Emmys for his performances in the show - and people think it's just a matter of time until he makes it a hat-trick.

bill hader continues pushing the boundaries of the 30-minute comedy to its absolute limits…describing season three as anything less than a masterpiece would be disingenuous

On Twitter, Ben Stiller wrote: "Season finale and just the entire season of #Barry was such high level work all around. Acting, writing and directing."

Writer Eric Italiano tweeted: "Man, Bill Hader. Bravo.

"Said this before: he’s got a Jordan Peele/Ben Affleck thing going where it’s obvious from jump street he's a natural born STAR director.

"To write, act, and direct #Barry into becoming one of TV's best shows has me amped to see what he tackles next."

While another Twitter user wrote: "#Barry season 3 is a masterpiece in storytelling. Some of the most gripping episodes ever on television.

"Powerhouse performance and Bill Hader is one of the best tv directors right now. He, needs to do a feature film. The way this show balances humour and drama is extraordinary."

So, if you want to see what the hype is all about, you've got three seasons to get stuck into. Enjoy.
