What TikTok’s Group 7 trend means as it sparks real-life meet up

Are *you* part of Group 7?

The number seven appears to be having another viral moment, and it's all thanks to TikTok.

If you've scrolled social media in the last two or so days, then you'll have likely come across the term 'Group 7'.

The latest number-based trend to take over the internet has seen people declare themselves as part of the elusive group without much further context.

This is not to be confused with the '6, 7' meme, of course, which is driving both parents and teachers around the world a little bit nuts.

Group 7's popularity has now grown beyond the limitations of the internet, with members organizing their first real-life meet-up in London on Friday (October 24).

Despite all this, people are still not sure what the heck Group 7 is.

How did it start, what is it and how can you join the internet's most exclusive new club?

The trend originates from a TikTok video by indie singer-songwriter Sophia James.

Essentially, the former American Idol contestant was trying to 'win' the TikTok algorithm - and succeeded!

One night she posted a bunch of videos, numbered one to seven, telling people in different ways which group they're in.

Soundtracking each video is her new single, 'So Unfair'.

At the time of writing, the Group 7 video has racked up 31.7 million views on TikTok.

So yes, it was pretty much a clever marketing tactic by Sophia - although she almost never pressed post on the viral Group 7 video, as she told the New York Times.

Why is Group 7 so special?

Group 7 members have decided they are elite - the baddies of the internet, hot girls, 'billionaire status', and so on.

Naturally, social media users have ran with it, posting their own videos and memes about how great Group 7 is.

Celebrities, including Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline and activist Malala Yousafzai, are also jumping on the trend.

The San Francisco 49ers recently shared a video of team members dancing, with text saying: "How it feels being a part of group 7."

How do I join Group 7?

Your Group membership depends entirely on which of Sophia's videos the TikTok algorithm pushes out to you.

You've got to be on the side of the TikTok gods to be let in, essentially. Simply searching for and watching the video yourself doesn't count.

You must be chosen! (AKA, chronically online enough...).

Why is Group 7 meeting up?

Sophia decided to take the Group 7 'bit' even further by orchestrating an in-real-life meet-up.

Taking to her website, she wrote: "This is the funniest thing I have ever seen and think you should all meet in real life."

The first official meet up takes place this Friday (October 24) in London, at The Bedford Pub in Balham from 8pm.

A meet-up in Los Angeles is also in the works, Sophia teased.
