People baffled at video of high school students from 1989

Twitter users were left shocked by the unearthed footage

In a lot of ways, 1989 was a big year - the Berlin Wall had come down, Chinese protesters defied tanks in Tiananmen Square and Taylor Swift was born.

But as far as fashion goes, it was a year of...interesting choices and trends.

A video of high schoolers in the decade's final year was shared to Twitter by A Slice Of History and people had a lot to say about the fashion choices of the teens.

The common consensus was that the students all looked older than they actually were.

"Man I’m 37 and those kids still look older than me," joked one commenter, while another remarked: "Can someone explain to me why high school students each year look younger and younger. These people look like they’re in their mid 30s."

As to why they looked older than years, one user theorised it was due to their hairstyles.

"They look 'older' because they continued to dress that way as they aged, and now they are “old”, and we View their same styles as old rather than hip," they wrote.

A second said: "They don't actually look older we just associate traits that they have with being old (such as hairstyles and clothing)."

The students were noted to look older than they actually were.

Another claimed it's all down to 'diet and social interaction', adding: "Foods today are pumped with so many chemicals/preservatives etc. These have an effect on the human body.

"Back then, people actually interacted with others OUTSIDE since they could walk and didn't just have a tablet/phone in their face 24/7."

I mean, if the argument is that tablets and phones keep you looking young, then I'm failing to see a downside frankly.

Elsewhere, other commenters were noting how uncomfortable the youngsters looked being on camera.

This was two decades before smartphones became a staple of daily life so their discomfort is understandable.

"Wtf no smartphones?", one commenter remarked, to which another replied: "No we had these things called conversation and books. I was 19 in ‘89 and it was just the best era."

A third added: "No internet, no cell phones, good music, cruising, neighbors interacting, affordable living. It was pretty great."

The students were filmed in their classroom in 1989.

A fourth chimed in: "They look older, healthier, and have more self awareness. 99% of them don't even want to look at the camera.

"Phones and social have desensitized some many people I don't know if we will ever get back to this."

And as is the way with the internet, when it comes to the 1980s, the students drew comparisons with Stranger Things.

One student in particular was highlighted as resembling Eddie Munson, who was a firm fan favourite in season four.
