Whoopi Goldberg gives The Pope merchandise from Sister Act during 'extraordinary' meeting

The head of the Catholic Church told the actor she's 'very important'.

Whoopi Goldberg has met with The Pope and she made sure to give him a gift he'd never forget.

The Sister Act star had an emotional introduction to the head of the Catholic Church and decided to gift him some merchandise from her legendary film.

A snippet of her interaction with His Holiness was teased on The View, where she said: "I thought, I'm going to walk into this building and I'm going to burst into flames.

"I brought him some stuff from Sister Act that he asked for."

Before she handed over the items, The Pope told Goldberg that she is 'very important'.

Goldberg admitted that the film is a bit 'silly' and added: "You know, we're trying to help bring the sisters into the 21st century."

While she might have downplayed the impact of her 1992 movie where she plays a woman in witness protection who becomes a nun, the church leader was impressed.

"One of the best things you can do for people is to help them and to have joy and to make them laugh," he told her.

That's one hell of a commendation.

She told her View co-stars that it was an incredible moment for her.

"He is funny. He was like, 'The shoes, are you wearing the red shoes?' I was like, 'I'm just trying to bring the nuns into the 21st century'. He laughed," she recalled.

She added: "It was kind of shocking, because for 11 years, this is something I've tried to do.

"He was quite amazing. He is exactly what I hoped he would be, which is a Pope for all people, regardless of religion, which I appreciated.

"I wanted to thank him for all of my gay friends, and for all of my divorced friends, because he said 'Listen, God loves you no matter what, come back to the church."

Goldberg described the meeting as an 'extraordinary experience'.

She also teased that the meeting gave her inspiration for a scene in Sister Act 3.

Goldberg has revealed that a sequel is underway for the franchise, however there's no word on when we can expect to see it hit the big screen.

But she said it would be cool to have a moment at St Peter's Square at the Vatican.

The actor said on Instagram: "Picture Sister Act and all the nuns standing here, waiting for the Pope to come out.

"Maybe that's going to happen in the new movie.

"You don't know. You never know, but we are in Rome, and I am in Vatican City. What could I be doing? Why could I be here? We'll find out."
