Matthew McConaughey has revealed he took a lengthy break from telling his mom details about his life for a rather sad reason.
The Dallas Buyers Club actor has revealed in a recent interview with PEOPLE how he had to take an eight-year-long 'hiatus' from his mother, Mary Kathleen 'Kay' McConaughey.
Despite attributing his secret to success to his 93-year-old mom, who is set to star alongside her son for the first time in a new movie, the veteran actor revealed it wasn't always easy balancing a relationship and fame.
The 55-year-old Interstellar star said he feels 'closer' to his mom now, but at one point had to take a break from telling her too much - because she couldn't respect his privacy.

"I’d say we’re closer now," he told the outlet. "We had about an eight-year period where I had to have short conversations with her on our Sunday phone calls because she was sharing a lot of that information.
"I’d tell her something on Sunday between son and mom, and Tuesday I’d read about it in the news or see it in the local paper. She couldn’t help herself."

Kay admitted: "We were on a hiatus."

However, years later, McConaughey said he became more comfortable with his own fame and he did not care too much about reports in the media.
He continued: "About eight years after that I got stable enough with my own position and fame that I was like, 'You know what? My mom can say whatever the hell she wants.'
"It’s much more fun now."
The insight comes as the pair, alongside McConaughey's 17-year-old son, Levi, are set to star in the upcoming Apple TV+ movie, The Lost Bus, in a new family milestone.

The survival thriller follows the story of the 2018 Camp Fire, considered the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California's history.
Directed by Paul Greengrass, the movie stars the Hollywood celeb as a bus driver who comes to the rescue of 22 schoolchildren while Kay returns to the big screen some 14 years later after her cameo in the 2011 black comedy, Bernie.
It also marks Levi's debut as he plays the part of his dad's son, while McConaughey's real-life mom also plays the part of his character's mom.

McConaughey, who shares two other children with former Brazilian model, Camila, Vida, 15, and Livingston, 12, further revealed his son landed the role based on his own merit after pulling the family name off his audition tape.
“I had to badger him,” Levi said when asking his dad to join the project.
Meanwhile, McConaughey revealed he wasn't too keen on the idea of his children entering the industry.
"The first 15 years in Hollywood I was like, 'I’d never want my kid to grow up in the business'. And when I hit about 40, right about the time we had Levi, I looked around at how many special people I’ve met in my life, how much travel and what an awesome, healthy, cool experience that’s been for me in my life."

Ultimately, he decided it would be 'a privilege' if his youngsters could follow in his footsteps.
Reflecting on his role in the movie, Levi said there was only one rough scene that the pair had to play.
"There was a tough scene to do with my dad because we’re fighting, and we have a good relationship where that’s luckily not how it is in real life," the teen said. "But I’m enjoying it more and loving it."
The Lost Bus is available to stream on Apple TV+ as of October 3.
