Charlie Sheen has revealed that he slept with men in an explosive new book and two-part Netflix documentary.

Sheen, 60, described how he had 'flipped the menu over' during a period of his life where he was sleeping with a lot of women and wanting to try something new.

In the film and book, Sheen defiantly says he will not 'run from [his] past' or 'let it own [him]'.

The upcoming book and Netflix documentary are set to examine parts of Sheen's life, including his sex life and his struggle with addiction.

In the film, Sheen is asked about his past relationships with men, as well as how it feels to openly talk about the topic after many years.

Sheen had one word to describe the feeling.

"Liberating. It's f***ing liberating ... [to] just talk about stuff," he said.

"It's like a train didn't come through the side of the restaurant. A f***ing piano didn't fall out of the sky. No one ran into the room and shot me."

Sheen also revealed that he had been taking crack when he began to sleep with men.

Speaking on Good Morning America, Sheen said: "That's what started it. That’s where it was born, or sparked.

"And in whatever chunks of time that I was off the pipe, trying to navigate that, trying to come to terms with it — "Where did that come from? … Why did that happen?" — and then just finally being like, 'So what?' "So what? Some of it was weird.

"A lot of it was f***ing fun. And life goes on."

At some point, Sheen contracted HIV, a health condition that he kept secret for a long time.

Despite his efforts to conceal his diagnosis, Sheen has spoken how overnight guests would demand payment from him after seeing his medication at his home, threatening to reveal his condition if he didn't pay.

Initially, Sheen would pay, but in 2015 he publicly revealed that he was HIV positive on the Today Show, saying at the time: "I just need to be free of that and then see how the world feels if people know that stuff."

He added: "I do know for a fact that I never passed it on."

HIV medication now means that if properly managed a patient can reduce the virus to a point where it cannot be transmitted.

The two-part documentary film, called aka Charlie Sheen, is due to release on Netflix on September 10.
