Andrew Garfield has confirmed exactly what he was doing in that photo from the Oscars, and it seems it was pretty much as we all suspected.

The Spider-Man actor was at the award ceremony during the now-infamous moment Will Smith stormed onto the stage and slapped Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Shortly after the incident a snap of Garfield staring intently at his phone went viral, with social media users pondering over what he was up to and if he was casually texting some pals about what had just gone down.

Now, the 38-year-old has revealed what he was doing and it turns out it we were most likely spot on.

Speaking on The View, Garfield said: “So, I feel so bad because, you know, Kevin Costner’s introducing the director nominees in the most beautiful and elegant way, and I’m like ‘There’s no way I’m gonna be on camera during this'.

“And everyone’s texting me, asking me, you know, what they’re asking me, like what the vibe in the room is. At that moment, my friends took priority over Kevin. But I feel really bad about that.” Ah, mate, we’d all do it.

The actor was then pressed on exactly what he’d been texting about, but he remained tight lipped and refused to spill any extra details.

So much so, that Garfield went on to say he wouldn’t be commenting on the slap at all.

He went on: “Everything’s been said. There’s no need for me to weigh in on that.

“Every possible version of the discussion has happened, and I have no interest in adding my voice to something that’s already been so well spoken [about].” Fair enough.

Garfield, who is currently promoting his new show Under the Banner of Heaven, recently revealed he’s going to ‘rest for a little bit’ and ‘be a bit ordinary for a while’.

He told Variety: "I need to recalibrate and reconsider what I want to do next and who I want to be and just be a bit of a person for a while.

"Because as you know, that is a washing machine, that awards season."
