How to turn off bizarre chirping sound that's affecting millions of Facebook users

Simply turning your phone off and on again won't do the trick this time

Facebook users have reported hearing a 'weird chirping sound' while using the platform but don't fret, there's a way to turn it off.

If you're already burnt out despite it only being February and were peering outside your office window every time you open Facebook's mobile app thinking a bird was taking the mickey out of you, then fear not, because you're not losing your marbles even though your gruelling 9-5 day job may be making you feel like you are.

The social media platform has been leaving users baffled - and driving them stir crazy - over its new 'chirping' sound, but thankfully there's a way to get rid of it.

You might expect it with X - formerly known as Twitter - but instead, it's Facebook which has been making bird-like noises and sending users into a frenzy trying to figure out what on Earth is going on.

Naturally, people have then flooded to X to question why a new sound is erupting from their phone every time they have a 'scroll' on Mark Zuckerberg's original platform.

One X user wrote: "Tf why do I keep hearing the refresh chirping sound when I scroll on facebook???"

"@facebook Come get your mobile app. It’s broken. My sensory issues can’t handling this constant chirping glitch," another added.

And a third questioned: "My Facebook is making a weird chirping sound while I scroll and I tried restarting my phone and it didn’t work. What do I do now?"

Well, to answer many users' frantic questions, there's an easy enough way to turn off Facebook mobile app's new chirping sound.

Thankfully, there's a way to turn the sound off.
Facebook

The first step - which is pretty self-explanatory - is you open your Facebook mobile app.

Next, you click the bottom right button in the app - it'll have your profile picture as a thumb image alongside three lines and the label 'Menu'.

This takes you to the Menu and if you scroll down a bit you'll see the 'Settings and Privacy' option. Click this, it'll expand and then you click on 'Settings'.

Scroll down a bit again and you'll see the 'Media' button under the 'Preferences' heading.

And the final and most important step is you then change the toggle for 'In-app sound' to off - it won't be blue anymore - and then you can embrace your peaceful, quiet and chirp-free experience of the app.

However, be warned it will also turn off the sound effects for when you press the Like, Comment or Share buttons too, although your video audio playback is safe.

Meta employee Andy Stone told UNILAD the sound is the result of an 'error'. A tweet by Stone reads: "Hearing a chirping noise while scrolling through your Facebook Feed on your iPhone? It’s not you, it’s us! And it’s an unfortunate technical error that we're in the process of fixing."
