God of War: Ragnarök is already being billed as one of the greatest games of all time just a day after its release.

The PS4 and PS5 exclusive is a sequel to 2018's God of War - which was also widely praised by critics and fans, with many declaring it the best game of the PS4 generation.

For the developers, it can't have been easy to make a sequel to a game that was so highly praised.

But based on the reception Ragnarök has received by fans and critics in the last couple of days, it seems Sony Santa Monica has somehow topped it.

Many gamers have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the game, and it fair to say they are very impressed.

One content creator said: "Just finished God of War Ragnarök. (40+ Hours!) Hands down the greatest video game I've played since the original 'The Last of Us'. This game is an absolute masterpiece."

A second added: "only played for an hour and a half so far but I can comfortably say that God of War: Ragnarök is the greatest video game of all time."

Fans are loving God of War: Ragnarok.

And a third said: "The first story quest of God of War Ragnarök is pretty damn epic. It's one of the greatest beginning chapters of a video game I've ever played. Incredible!"

Ragnarök continues the story of Kratos and his son Atreus from the 2018 game. It is set three years after the events of God of War, and as the title suggests, will follow Kratos and Atreus as they try to prevent or bring about Ragnarök.

The PS5 version of God of War: Ragnarök is sitting at an impressive 94 percent on Metacritic, making it a 'must play', according to the review aggregates website.

Like fans, critics didn't have a bad thing to say about Ragnarök either, with the game achieving top scores across the board.

IGN's review read: "God of War Ragnarök is an almighty achievement and creates a new high that makes many of its peers look mortal by comparison."

Meanwhile, Digital Chumps' review said: "Though not the same tectonic shift as its predecessor, God of War Ragnarök represents one of the finest pieces of interactive entertainment available."

Critics are loving the sequel too.

And LADbible sister site GAMINGbible's review read: "Ragnarök is a fantastically impressive sequel that delivers in every conceivable way. It expands on and improves the formula established in 2018’s God of War hugely, offering up blistering action, gut-wrenching twists, and truly cinematic boss battles with real emotional heft behind them."
