Where you live can apparently determine whether you'll be abducted by little green men, with some states just that much more popular with inquisitive extraterrestrials.

If you go to bed having nightmares about being abducted by aliens, you'll want to turn away.

Data from the National UFO Reporting Center - which contains 149,000 sighting entries - alongside digital media reports has revealed which states in the US are most often frequented by flying saucers and visitors from other worlds.

Numbers were crunched to figure out which states have had the most UFO sightings and subsequently could pose the biggest risk of being abducted by aliens, Casino.CA reports.

Coming in at spot number 10 is Nevada with a reported one UFO sighting per 1,740 people, Colorado following in just behind with one per 1,715.

Arizona comes in at seventh place with one UFO sighting per 1,512 and sixth goes to Pennsylvania with one sighting per 1,456 people.

But it's the top five where you should start really paying attention.

5) New York

You may've thought the bright lights of New York City might deter any UFOs from hovering overhead, however, the most populous city in the US has a sighting of one UFO per 1,301 people, seeing it take a place in the top five.

With a population of around a whopping eight million, this means there's been around 6,149 UFO sightings reported in the city.

4) Oregon

Oregon follows shortly after with one UFO sighting per 1,156 people.

With a population of around four million, this means there's been around 3,460 reports of UFO sightings in the area.

3) Florida

With over 11,000 UFO sightings reported over the years - roughly one for every 1,144 people - you may not want to move to Florida if you believe in aliens and your worst fear is something out of 2009's The Fourth Kind occurring.

A video was even shared online of a 'UFO' appearing to zoom '2,000 MPH' over a beach in Florida.

Drum roll please for the top two...

2) Washington

There've been a staggering 7,125 reported sightings of UFOs in Washington since 1974 and the state has a UFO sighting rate of one per 1,093 people.

And - given ET: The Extra-Terrestrial - it's only right that taking the top spot is none other than sunny California.

1) California

Since 1974, there's been a reported 36,286 sightings of UFOs making California 'the UFO capital of America'.

California's UFO sightings per person come to 1,075, one 'mass' sighting seeing UFOs allegedly spotted above a military base.

So, keep your eyes peeled for any flying discs next time you're taking a hike near the Hollywood Hills, eh?
