Two teens shot after accidentally getting into the wrong car in parking lot

The two cheerleaders who were shot are now thankfully stable after being treated in hospital

Two teenage girls have been accidentally shot after stepping into the wrong car in a parking lot in Elgin, Texas.

Authorities say that the two cheerleaders were injured, with one being treated and released at the scene on Tuesday (18 April) while the other was helicoptered to hospital in a critical condition, according to Elgin police.

The man in question of committing the shooting is Pedro Tello Rodriguez Jr., 25, who has been charged with deadly conduct and a third-degree felony.

Court documents say that Rodriquez fled the scene after the shooting and was arrested at his home later on.

The incident actually involved four girls, with two of them being shot at the parking lot.

Heather Roth, a cheerleader with the Woodlands Elite Cheer Co, discussed her version of events on a Instagram live recently.

She said that her and the three girls had just finished cheerleading practice when they went into the parking lot just after midnight on Tuesday.

Roth said that she got out of her friends car and got into another one that she thought was her own, but she was shocked to find a man sat in the passenger seat.

She said that she got out of the car and got back into her friend's car, and this is when the chaos ensued.

The man approached their vehicle, with Roth claiming that she rolled down the window to apologise to the man for stepping in his car.

This is when the man started shooting, with one of those getting injured being Payton Washington, who has recently been accepted to Baylor University and its acrobatics and tumbling team.

In a statement released by the university, Fee Mulkey, Baylor's acrobatics and tumbling coach, said: "Payton is a strong young lady; if you know her, you know that about her. I have no doubt she's going to get through this.

"She's an amazing athlete but a better human, and that's why she's a part of our Baylor family.

"My prayers are with Payton and her teammates that were involved in last night's tragic event, I know mental wounds also leave scars.

"We want to lift up the athletes and their families during this difficult time. We love Payton and we wish her well as she recovers."

The coach added that he was going to visit Washington in hospital.

Washington's father, Kelan Washington, told NBC News that his daughter was shot in the leg and back, but is now stable after having her spleen removed.

A GoFundMe has since been set up to cover Washington's medical expenses - if you'd like to donate, you can do so here.
