A basketball player has notched the first few points of his college career and he's done it one-handed.

Hansel Emmanuel lost his left arm in a childhood incident, according to CBS, but he hasn't let that get in the way of his sporting dreams.

The news outlet claims cinderblocks fell on him when he was just six years old while he was living in his birth country of the Dominican Republic.

Doctors did everything they could to help him, but they ultimately made the decision to amputate his arm.

While that might have put anyone off wanting to play sports, it didn't faze Hansel.

The 19-year-old plays for Northwestern State University and he certainly showed off his talents over the weekend when his team played Louisiana-Monroe.

He performed a quick layup after dodging around two defenders and the crowd went wild.

But, if you thought that was good, wait until you see what the 6-foot-6 guard did next.

He completed a hectic dunk that left everyone in attendance screaming.

Emmanuel scored five points in Northwestern State's 91-73 win over Louisiana-Monroe.

According to a post on his school's website, he said: "I had to keep going after the layup – that was my first bucket.

"I know my family was proud.

"I had to keep working. You can't give up."

This was the fifth time Hansel has played with his college team but the first time he's managed to get scores on the board.

CBS says the teenager went viral online thanks to a highlights reel of him playing in high school.

He racked up some impressive goals while in school and he started getting offers from colleges around the United States.

But he's not the only young basketballer with a disability who's making waves in the US.

Josiah Johnson has been playing basketball all his life and never let his lack of legs hold him back, and now he's part of his school's team after earning his place there.

WSFA reports that the young man from Louisville, Kentucky was born without legs but managed to earn his place in the school team.

The middle school student explained that he was really excited to get the nod from the coach letting him know he'd made it into the team.

He said: "It's just something I had to do, you know I don't want you doubting me because I have no legs. I want to show you that I'm just as human as you and just as good as you.

"I was acting like I wasn't excited in front of the coach, I was like 'okay', but when I went into the gym I was excited, I was like 'I made the team, I made the team'."

Since making the team Josiah has become a starting member of the lineup.
