There's a reason hot dogs and buns aren't sold in the same number

There's actually a reason why hot dogs and buns are sold in different numbers

There's actually a reason why hot dogs and buns are sold in different numbers.

We've all had that moment when we're stocking up for a BBQ only to realise we have way more hot dogs than buns.

You could buy a separate pack of buns, sure, but then you're faced with too much bread and it's a never-ending cycle of disappointment.

So, why are the products sold in separate numbers? Well, the game hasn't been rigged against you, if that's what you think.

There's actually a pretty reasonable explanation for the annoying mismatch.

As National Hot Dog Sausage Council explains - yes that is a real thing - it's to do with logistics: "Sandwich rolls, or hot dog buns, most often come eight to the pack because the buns are baked in clusters of four in pans designed to hold eight rolls.

"While baking pans now come in configurations that allow baking 10 and even 12 at a time, the eight-roll pan remains the most popular."

There you have it, no one is trying to ruin your BBQ on purpose, it's all about the pans.

If at this point you're wondering why on earth they haven't fixed this glaring issue, well, Heinz ketchup was onto it.

The Canadian outpost of the company launched a Change.org petition, which amassed over 35,000 signatures.

Speaking about its mission to change the hot dog industry for the better, Heinz said: "Help us change the hot dog industry for the better and continue to get wieners and buns sold in even packs all over the world. We’ve succeeded in select parts of Canada but we’re not stopping until the hot dog packaging mismatch is solved globally. Hot dog history is in your hands."

And the general public were in strong agreement, with people commenting on their reasons for signing, one wrote: "We all have a responsibility to right the wrongs in the world."

While another seemed to get a little too into the whole debate: "It's unamerican to have this imbalance of wieners to buns. Every last wiener deserves to be stuffed into a bun. Plain and simple. Don't crush my soul and make me put the last two wieners on bread. What a savage survival situation oy reminds me of. Who are we? Plebeian Neanderthals?? Even the cavemen agree, match the carbs and the protein!!"

Heinz tried to tackle the issue.

A third simply added: "It's annoying to have extra hot dogs!"

In an update posted 15 June last year, the petition revealed its official '10-packs of Wonder® buns' are available in Ontario, Canada.

However, it noted: "This is just the start. Let's make hot dog packs even all over the world."
