Fans are praising heart-warming moment Superman’s son comes out as queer in new DC comic

One reader said it was the 'best issue yet', while another claimed it 'healed' their 'little queer heart'.

Fans have had a heartwarming reaction to Superman’s son coming out as queer in a new DC comic book series.

The latest issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El featured an endearing coming-out scene between Clark Kent’s son and his superhero father.

The scene unfolded in the 17th issue when Superman returned from a mission to Warworld when his son Jon revealed he was in a relationship with the refugee 'hacktivist' Jay Nakamura.

Many fans took to Twitter to praise the queer-inclusive comic book series, as one person wrote: “This week's issue of Superman Son of Kal El meant everything to me.

“As the bisexual kid who tried to come out to her parents and didn't get the warmest reception...to see THE HERO of comics give his son that love I needed, healed my queer little heart. Thanks.”

Another said: “Superman: Son of Kal-El # 17 was the best issue yet. The two themes of the issue being Jon’s coming out and parenthood tied nicely together. The scenes flowed well with, up until the final scene, each being about a son asking for his parent’s help, comfort or approval.”

While another fan shared: “I’m not crying, you're crying! Latest issue of Superman Son of Kal El. Jon finally gets the courage to come out to his father. I wish every everyone could have this kind of love and acceptance.”

Writer of the John Kent series, Tom Taylor, recently sat down with Polygon to disclose his writing process for the ground breaking issue.

Taylor said he spent plenty of time fine-tuning the scene between John Kent and his father as he didn’t want to write another ‘cliche’ queer narrative.

He added that it was essential for him to convey Clark embracing his son’s sexuality as he felt the dialogue would resonate with 'parents of queer children'.

He told the outlet: “I wanted to show that Clark understood and empathized with his son’s apprehension. After it was written, I talked to the artists, Cian Tormey and Ruairí Coleman, about the importance of this issue, and both told me they’d teared up reading the script."

Taylor added: “Cian and Ruairí both took so much care, and depicted these scenes beautifully. I hope what the Man of Steel feels and how he acts in this issue resonates with other parents of queer children.”
