Almost exactly a year after fans finally got their hands on Elden Ring, developer FromSoftware has confirmed an expansion is in the works.

The multiplayer adventure game took the world by storm following its release last February, where it became one of the best-reviewed games ever made while simultaneously leaving people frustrated over how difficult it was.

One year on and I can only hope that a lot of players have since figured out how to beat some of the tougher challenges in the game, because there will soon be some new tasks to face.

This morning, the official Twitter account for Elden Ring shared the big news: "Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together. An upcoming expansion for #ELDENRING Shadow of the Erdtree, is currently in development."

The image shared alongside the tweet shows a vast landscape dotted with ruins and an extinguished Erdtree, while a lone figure rides through a field of spectral gravestones.

The tweet added: "We hope you look forward to new adventures in the Lands Between."

And the news quickly caught the attention of thousands of fans, with many sharing their excitement over the possibility of new adventures.

"Absolutely reeling from the Elden Ring expansion announcement," one fan wrote, adding: "I finally have something to be immediately excited about again alongside armoured core."

Another tweeted: "After a year, my favourite game #EldenRing finally announced an expansion coming soon! I CANNOT F***ING WAIT!!!!!!!"

The response to news of the development hasn't just been excitement, though, as many gamers have also used the opportunity to share theories about exactly what the development might have in store for players.

One fan honed in on the figure seen in the image, saying it showed 'Miquella on Torrent' and quoting: "He possesses the wisdom, the allure, of a god - he is the most fearsome Empyrean of all."

Building on this knowledge, they suggested: "I think a huge boss fight is coming."

News of the expansion quickly led to possible theories.

Another Elden Ring player focused on the tree in the image, noting that it appeared to show two trees intertwined and speculated that this could be the 'great tree' referred to in descriptions for the game released for the Closed Network Test, which is when a select few players are able to explore and play the game ahead of its release.

"The roots of the greattree drive far and wide through the Earth of the lands between. They were once entwined with the roots of the erdtree, or so they say," the gamer cited.

Some have also suggested the expansion may take place in the past, but another fan added: "Personally think it might be a Miquella DLC still and that we will enter his dream but who knows?"

Unfortunately, only the developers know. FromSoftware hasn't yet given any indication as to when the expansion might arrive, but until then, at least fans have their theories to keep them going.
