Dad seen laughing in police interview after fatally shooting daughter's ex-boyfriend

An Ohio dad who shot and killed his daughter’s ex-boyfriend was seen nervously chuckling during an interview with police hours later

An Ohio dad who shot and killed his daughter’s ex-boyfriend was seen nervously chuckling during an interview with police hours later.

Mitchell Duckro, 52, shot James Rayl three times when the 22-year-old tried to force entry into his Sidney home at approximately 11.00am on 31 July.

Recounting the incident in an interview room with a Shelby County Sheriff’s Office detective hours later, Duckro nervously laughed as he admitted ‘my daughter didn’t really tell me stuff about guys’.

Duckro’s 22-year-old daughter Allyson reportedly dated Rayl some years before the incident, but the two had broken up 18 months prior to Rayl showing up unannounced on the doorstep.

Doorbell camera footage obtained by MailOnline shows the moment Duckro fired three bullets through his front door, fatally wounding Rayl, who stumbled off the porch before collapsing in the driveway.

In his police interview, Duckro explained that tensions had been mounting between Rayl and his daughter and that Allyson had blocked her ex on social media.

According to Duckro, Rayl had left a voicemail on Allyson’s phone the night before the shooting that ‘freaked out’ the family.

Duckro also told investigators he was ‘nervous’ when Rayl showed up the next day on his doorstep, and before opening fire, had tried to warn him off.

Explaining his response to Rayl trying to shove his way inside, Duckro said: “I was trying to shoot but my clip wasn’t in. And I freaked out... he was pushing hard and that’s when the gun fired, I think three times.”

Later on in the police interview, Duckro told the officer: “[Allyson] didn’t really tell me stuff, about guys,” to which the law enforcement official replied: “I understand daughters don’t want to talk too much with their dads about that kind of stuff.”

Explaining why he made the decision to shoot Rayl, Duckro shared: “‘I noticed he started to jiggle the handles and stuff to see if it was locked and that was when I went up to the door.

“I wanted to make sure he wouldn’t force his way in. I’m pretty sure I was telling him to stop and leave and get off my porch or something.”

He went on: “But I had my nine in my hand and then he started hitting it with his shoulder, pretty hard. Eventually he was getting in, and when the door was open is when I shot.

“I shot through the window part of the door, because it was open and he was coming in. I didn’t have no grip.”

A grand jury decided against charging Duckro over the shooting.
