If there's one thing people should learn, it's not to mess with Chappell Roan.

The 26-year-old singer joined a host of other celebrities at last night's VMAs (September 11) where she was up for four awards.

Roan went on to win Best New Artist and dedicated the award to 'queer and trans people who fuel pop'.

Her speech went on: "To the gays who dedicate my songs to someone they love or hate. And thank you to the people who are fans, who listen to me, who hear me when I share my joy and fears. Thank you for listening."

But before receiving the prestigious award, Roan had an apparent run-in with a photographer on the red carpet.

Apparently the 'Good Luck, Babe!' singer was being urged to turn by photographers taken snaps on the star-studded affair, when one of them seemingly shouted 'shut the f**k up' in Roan's direction.

She then turned and replied as she pointed in their direction: "No, you shut the f**k up."

Roan followed up with: "No. Not me, b*tch."

Some people have since sided with the singer and said she had 'every right' to hit back at the photographer.

One person wrote on Twitter: "Half these replies didn't hear the way that photographer spoke to her, she had every right to snap back.

"Celebrities don't have to sit there and take it when people are rude to them even though it's 'good for PR'."

"FILE THIS UNDER THINGS WE LOVE TO SEE," added another.

A third went on to say: "Good for her, nobody should feel uncomfortable at an event."

However, others suggested that fame is already 'getting to her head' following her outburst.

Roan was asked about the heated exchange later at the event and she defended her actions.

"This is quite overwhelming and quite scary," she told Entertainment Tonight.

"I think for someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at you, the carpet is horrifying. And I yelled back."

"You don't get to yell at me like that," continued the 'HOT TO GO!' hitmaker.

Roan has been very clear about her boundaries since rising to fame this year, and even hit out at her fans for being 'creepy'.

The singer took to TikTok to share a video where she addressed how her fans interact with her in public and insisted that she's 'allowed to say no to creepy behavior'.

A rep for Roan has been approached following last night's incident.
