James Blunt Reveals 'Creepy' Meaning Behind 'You're Beautiful'

You're Beautiful is one of the most famous songs of the 2000s, but do you know its true meaning?

You're Beautiful is one of the most famous songs of the 2000s, but James Blunt has now revealed the 'creepy' origins of the hit track.

It's the song that made Blunt a worldwide star, for better or worse. It topped charts and became endlessly replayed, earning continual plaudits from his fans, but fierce mockery from his critics. Rolling Stone ranked it in the top 10 'most annoying songs', and even the singer said it had been 'force-fed down people's throats' when it was at its peak.

It was released as a single in 2005, but have you ever actually considered what the song is about? The video seems to show Blunt taking his own life by leaping off a massive cliff into icy water, and he's clearly singing about a woman in his life, but who?

Blunt appeared on The John Bishop Show last night, February 12, where he discussed the meaning behind the song. 'It's about me stalking somebody else's girlfriend on the underground while I'm high... but people play it at their weddings, which is nice,' he said.

Back in 2006, he also explained, 'It's kind of miserable. It was about seeing my ex-girlfriend on the underground in London with her new man, who I didn't know existed. She and I caught eyes and lived a lifetime in that moment, but didn't do anything about it and haven't seen each other since.'

Blunt also told The Guardian, 'One day I was on the underground in London and saw an ex-girlfriend with her new boyfriend. Our eyes met, but we just walked past each other, and I went home and wrote the words to You’re Beautiful in two minutes.

'I went to see my songwriter friend Sacha Skarbek in Los Angeles, and, with Amanda Ghost as a co-writer, we finished the song. It’s always been portrayed as romantic, but it’s actually a bit creepy. It’s about a guy who’s high and stalking someone else’s girlfriend on the subway. But everyone has those moments where you wonder... what if I'd said something?'

Reacting to the song's meaning online, one user wrote, 'I still can’t get over how James Blunt 'you’re beautiful' is about him high off his ass just staring at some lady on the train.'

'Ok I was this years old when I found out You’re Beautiful by @JamesBlunt is not a love song, but about him stoned stalking a girl. I hated that song. I hated James Blunt. Now bluntly (bad!!) I’m a fan!' another wrote.
