Rick and Morty fans are flocking to social media in shock over a YouTuber's turning of the characters into real people using artificial intelligence.

The animated sci-fi sitcom, created by Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, which follows the adventures of a sociopathic scientist and his grandson has had a remake and taken a very unexpected turn.

Have you ever wondered what the Smith family may look like 'as an 80s dark sci-fi'? Well, now you don't just have to try and imagine it, because Midjourney AI has done it for you.

The video begins with Rick and Morty, before revealing the transformation of other characters too.

The AI has transformed Jerry as well as Beth, Summer, Jessica, Mr Goldenfold, Principal Vagina, Bird person, Mr Meeseeks and Mr Poopybutthole as well as many more.

The video is accompanied by an eerie soundtrack too, which sounds like it's straight off of Stranger Things, adding to the ominous recreations of the characters.

The YouTube video has amassed over 100,000 views and thousands of likes.

One user said: "Crazy to think how easily Rick and Morty can descend into nightmare fuel when you strip away the goofy animation."

"Nicely done. I'm wondering when we'll start to see studios putting together fully animated renditions. Soon, it will reach a level where people could be hard-pressed to differentiate between something real and something animated / fabricated," another wrote.

A third added: "GearHead actually looks really cool! Pretty creepy and very convincing. Scary Terry is also actually pretty unnerving too which is neat."

A fourth said: "Rick looks like a mix between Christopher Lloyd and Stephen Ogg and it's freakin' me out."

Fans are freaked out by the transformation.

Others called for the AI characters to be taken even further and made into a show.

A user commented: "....am i the only one over here drooling at the idea of this being an actual show like come on!! we needa start funding this ASAP!"

"Wouldn't it be amazing if something exactly like this was developed? Not just have characters represent the show but to actually look like them," a second echoed.

A third wrote: "I'd watch it. Though even this preview of what it could be has left a scar on my soul I'll never recover from."

A final resolved: "I want this to be real so bad!!! someone please make this, I'll help work on it! whatever needs to be done."
