Although we’ve still got a while to wait until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits cinemas, James Gunn has teased what to expect, telling fans it will be ‘very different’ to the first two movies.

Given the groundbreaking success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe space opera series, it’s no surprise fans are hotly anticipating the third instalment, which is set for release in May 2023.

While the filmmaker is keeping schtum about the finer details, he did open up Vol. 3, saying it’s going to be a bold change from the first two Guardians of the Galaxy flicks.

Speaking with UNILAD, Gunn said, "We’re swinging for the fences with Vol. 3. It’s enormous and very different from the first two movies, and so we’ll just have to see if audiences embrace it. It’s going to be bold, that’s for sure."

He added that shooting has been tricky due to Covid, admitting it was ‘harder than it was for Peacemaker’, Gunn’s new The Suicide Squad spin-off show.

However, it’s coming along and, by the sounds of things, is going to offer something fresh and new to the dedicated fandom.

That includes Will Poulter, who is set to star as Adam Warlock in the upcoming MCU film.

"I love Will, he has been an absolute delight," said Gunn. "I also love Chuck Woody, who plays Mern In Peacemaker and is our primary villain in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."

Alongside Poulter and Woody, we’ll see our usual suspects return, including Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Vin Diesel as Groot and Pom Klementieff as Mantis.

Fans who can’t wait for the release are in luck, as the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is slated for later this year.

"We’re also working on the Holiday Special which I think is probably the greatest thing ever," added Gunn. "And that’s going to be out at the end of the year, so it’s not that far away."

Last year, the director revealed that Vol. 3 will be his last Guardians film while speaking to UNILAD about the release of The Suicide Squad.

"It’s the end of my run on Guardians, as I see it. It’s the end of Dave’s run," he said. "It’s really telling the story… we’re getting a lot more on the story of Rocket and who Rocket is. He’s the character I feel closest to… that’s what it is."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is due for release on May 5, 2023, while Peacemaker season one is available to watch from 22 March, 2022, on Sky Max and streaming service NOW via an Entertainment Membership
