Finn Wolfhard has hinted at a potential release date for the next season of Stranger Things.

The 20-year-old accidentally let slip just how far into the future the fifth season of the highly-anticipated series could be and the news has sent fans into a spiral.

I think the picture below is a pretty accurate summary.

In an interview with GQ, Wolfhard answered a series of questions that fans have asked him over social media.

Wolfhard has portrayed the character of Mike Wheeler in the award-winning television series since he was around 12 years old.

How time flies.

And one Instagram user seemed to be sharing a similar sentiment, as they wrote: "I can't believe season five will be the final season."

They then asked the IT actor what his 'favourite behind-the-scenes' memory was whilst filming Stranger Things before adding that they hoped the cast 'all stay friends'.

Wolfhard responded: "Yeah, I hope we all stay friends too.

"I don't think there's any way for us not to stay friends because we're kind of bonded forever I would say."

Wolfhard then revealed he felt the same way about the fifth season being the last.

He said: "I can't really believe it's the fifth season either.

"By the time it comes out, I will be 22 I think."

So, according to Wolfhard's reveal, it appears that Stranger Things' season five might be possibly hitting our small screens in 2025 - in two years time.

Also meaning that if season five is actually released by the time the actor hits 22-years-old, he will have been working on Stranger Things for an entire decade.

"I started working on the show at 12," he explained.

"That is insane."

Also noting what else will come about in his 22nd year, Wolfhard joked: "I'll be able to drink with Gaten and Caleb and Noah and the whole cast at the premier of the Stranger Things five."

He then ended his reply to the fan's question, saying that the whole concept 'blows his mind'.

But the accidental reveal has garnered some mixed responses on Twitter.

Wolfhard has been working on Stranger Things for almost a decade.

For some eagerly-anticipating fans, the news came as a shock.

"There’s absolutely no f***ing reason for this to drop in 2025 if filming starts in May. Absolutely no reason. This is getting ridiculous," commented one annoyed viewer.

Another realised: "Omg then I'll be 35 by that time, [I] can’t wait that long."

However, others were sceptical over Wolfhard's maths: "I just know he just didn't do the exact math. I bet he doesn't even know the exact release yet."

However, others seemed to be more patient about the reveal.

One person wrote: "Honestly, I'm okay with that."

"You guys don’t know how much effort it takes to make these kinds of shows," another said.

"There’s the recording itself which takes almost a year, adding all the effects, writing musical pieces, and more. 2025 is realistic."

However, with filming for series five happening this year, Netflix has not officially confirmed any release date.

So, looks like we'll have to wait till then.
