A spinoff to Dexter is reportedly in the works, and it will focus on a fan-favourite character.

It's fair to say that any spinoff to Dexter will receive a lot of attention.

The news has sent the internet into a spiral as fans can't wait for the next addition to the franchise.

The hit television series follows the life of Dexter Morgan, a man with homicidal tendencies, and the double life that he leads.

Played by Michael C. Hall, Dexter is a forensic technician for the police department by day and kills heinous criminals by night.

Dexter ran for eight seasons before coming to a halt after spanning an impressive seven years, from 2006 to 2013.

Then, in 2021, a ten-episode miniseries was released titled Dexter: New Blood, which is the most-watched Showtime series to date.

A spinoff series is reportedly in development.
    CBS

Chronicling the protagonist's movements after the world believed he had died in a boating accident, the plot shows how Dexter was able to successfully live a whole new life for nearly a decade.

Until, however, his son appears on the scene and his whole world gets flipped on its head - triggering some old homicidal tendencies from his past.

Finding himself at odds with a dangerous local, the series concludes with Dexter attempting to lead a regular life yet again.

Now, alongside a new season of New Blood, Showtime is interested in launching a prequel spinoff focusing on a totally different character.

Circling back to earlier seasons of the original Dexter series, this prequel will revolve around the Trinity Killer.

    CBS

Played by John Lithgow, the Trinity Killer served as the main antagonist in the fourth season of the show.

The six-time Emmy-winner soon became a fan-favourite after his excellent portrayal of Arthur Mitchell, the unassuming church deacon and family man who, like Dexter, also led a double life as a serial killer.

Lithgow played one of the most famous villains that the eight-season show produced, with many considering the fourth season the best out of the lot due to this presence.

At the end of the season in question, Dexter enacted his revenge and killed the Trinity Killer who, unfortunately, was able to murder Dexter's wife Rita - an event which arguably shaped the rest of the series.

The prequel will focus on The Trinity Killer.
    CBS

Set to give fans a look into the life and childhood of Arthur Mitchell, the prequel spinoff will reportedly go into the past of the serial killer and explore his traumatic childhood.

Given that the prequel is going back in time, it is not clear whether Lithgow will feature at all.

Alongside the spinoff, Showtime is also interested in another prequel series titled Dexter: Origins, which will follow a young Dexter Morgan as he graduates college and his journey to becoming the serial killer we know and love.

Fans are clearly excited by this news.

One Twitter user wrote: "I’m tempted to do a rewatch of Dexter now they’ve said there’s a prequel show happening."

"YES!!!" another clearly enthusiastic fan commented.

A third revealed: "I can’t wait! The possibilities are limitless!"
