Fans of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse think Gwen might be transgender, having spotted a number of supposed clues in the film.

Across the Spider-Verse continues the breath-taking action-packed story of Miles Morales, a 15-year-old kid from New York who is still reeling from his adventures in the multi-verse in 2018's Into The Spider-Verse.

“Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” a synopsis says.

“After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence.

“But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.”

The new animated film has been heaped with praise from critics and cinemagoers alike, with Spidey actor, Tom Holland, even saying he thinks it’s the best Spider-Man movie that’s ‘ever been made’.

But some fans have not just been enjoying the film, they’ve also been delving into the details – finding what they believe are hints that the character of Gwen is trans, including a ‘Protect trans kids’ flag in her bedroom, and the use of colour in certain scenes.

One person tweeted: “Thinking about Trans Gwen Stacy and her entire plot being about centered around her father's struggle to believe her and accept her identity.”

Someone else said: “#Gwen is Trans. Her whole arc is a trans allegory. The colors are the trans flag. But most telling. HER WHITE COP DAD WEARS THE TRANS COLORS ON HIS UNIFORM. NO F**KING COP IS THAT MUCH OF AN ALLY UNLESS THEY HAVE A TRANS FAMILY MEMBER!”

A third wrote: “I truly thought the "Gwen is trans" stuff in ATSV was just Twitter doing its usual thing but no it's AGGRESSIVELY loud about it Being draped in the trans colors while giving a speech about having to hide half of yourself from the people you love is as subtle as a brick.”

They added: “TO HER COP DAD WHO PUT A HANDMADE TRANS FLAG PATCH ABOVE HIS BADGE THAT GIRL IS TRANS AS HELL.”

When asked about the ‘Protect trans kids’ poster and ‘Black Lives Matter’ pins in Gwen’s room during an interview with Gay Times, actor Hailee Steinfeld said she hoped the audience would ‘pick up on them’.

“It feels so incredible to be a part of something that there are so many of those details that I don’t believe will go unnoticed,” she said.

“It’s all in the detail.”

And the good news is that producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller recently confirmed to UNILAD that we'll definitely be seeing Miles Morales and the gang one more time in an eventual third film, completing their Spider-Verse trilogy.

“This film is in the middle of a trilogy and the final film is the third film," Chris said.

Phil then joked: "I would say that we have a plan more than we’ve ever had."

Chris added: "That is true. We normally are kind of winging it along the way, giving ourselves problem, painting ourselves in a corner, trying to find our way out. But this time, we actually know where [we're] going."
