An Australian hotel has defended itself after its controversial dress code went viral.

Of course, restaurants and bars having dress codes are not exactly uncommon, particularly the upper-market places.

However, such rules can cause problems, particularly amongst those who have attended a venue a little unprepared.

Falvey’s Hotel Yamanto has recently made the headlines across the globe due to a viral Reddit post.

The Ipswich, Brisbane, establishment houses a bar, restaurant, beer garden and nightclub - making it a popular for many locals no matter what vibe they are after.

In a screenshot from the hotel's website, which has since been re-uploaded to Reddit, hooded jumpers or tops, bum bags and Nike TN shoes are among some of the items that may result in getting turned away from the venue.

Also prohibited are 'unfashionable thongs', 'men's solid red shoes', 'men's solid red shirts' and tracksuit pants.

Those who have steel cap boot or hi-vis workwear after 7pm may also be prohibited entry.

"Don't wear unfashionable thongs when you go to Falvey's Hotel in Yamanto (Ipswich)," the user who posted the dress code to Reddit penned.

"Who knew Ipswich had such high standards?" they added.

Many flocked to the comments section of the Reddit post to provide their reactions to the controversial dress code.

"Tradies are allowed if they go home and get their summer shirt and some Birkenstocks," one Redditor penned.

"So, tradies can only drink from 3pm to 7pm?" a second asked.

And a third remarked: "The biggest criminals wear suits and they're fine.. so you just keep out random people that might be criminal for wearing a hoody."

Other comments on social media have suggested the banned fashion choices target 'eshays' - something Falvey’s Hotel manager Michael Falvey doesn’t deny.

"Most people want to avoid these people, why would we want them in our hotel?” he told 7NEWS.com.au.

“It’s a common sense approach ... it’s a public safety approach.”

While it may have gone viral only recently, Falvey said the dress code has been in effect for more than three years.

"We don’t see any eshays, so it’s working in that sense," the hotel manager quipped.

"It’s a uniform — if you see cowboy boots and a hat, you think cowboy. If I see TNs and a bum bag, I think d*** head."

He added: "Workers are our backbone, we’re not kicking them out, but at some point they have to go home and get changed.

“What happens if you go dancing, and someone in steel cap boots steps on your foot?

“I don’t think we’re asking a lot.”
