First ever Florida Man Games competition is starting next year

The games in St. Augustine will pit Florida Men against one another in bizarre contests

They cause chaos, get in trouble with the law and make headlines almost every day, but now it's time for all the Florida Men to get together for an official Florida Man competition.

The date? February 2024. The place? St. Augustine. The events? Well, they're everything you'd expect from a competition designed for Florida Men.

And by that, I mean they're some of the most ridiculous games you could ever expect.

By now, I'm sure you know that Florida Man is more than just a man. It's more of a concept; a phenomenon fuelled by the creation of the @_FloridaMan X account almost a decade ago, back when the social media platform was just Twitter.

The account promised to share 'real-life stories of the world’s worst superhero', and over the years has shone a spotlight on Florida Men such as the one who 'Steals $33,000 Worth of Rare Coins, Cashes Them in CoinStar Machine for $29.30', and the one who 'Tried to Pay for McDonald’s With Weed'.

In honor of all of these terrible 'superheroes', Pete Melfi, a Florida man who owns the media outlet The 904 Now, designed the Florida Man Games.

The Florida Man Games will take place in St. Augustine.

Described by the organizer as 'the most insane athletic showdown on Earth', the games are designed to poke fun at Florida's headline-making reputation in a 'one-of-a-kind Floridian spectacle'.

Speaking to the Orlando Sentinel about the creation of the competition, Melfi explained: "We thought, ‘How can we really play on these Florida Man headlines that we hear so much about?’ Someone gave me the idea to make it into an athletic competition.

"It’s going to be a wild day of mud games and Florida-style obstacle courses. It’s going to really be an opportunity to live that Florida Man life for a day."

One of the games set to take place is the 'Evading Arrest Obstacle Course', in which contestants will have to jump over fences and run through yards while being chased by real police officers.

There's also the 'Category 5 Cash Grab', in which they'll have to try and grab as much money as they can in a booth while being hit with strong gusts of wind.

And of course we can't forget beer-belly wrestling, which is basically just what it says on the tin.

"You're about to dive headfirst into the most insane athletic showdown on Earth: The Florida Man Games™," the website explains.

"Where the events are as unexpected as the headlines that inspired them.

"Where the athletes are... let's just say, unconventionally talented. Think you've seen wild? Think again!"

Two former American Gladiators stars will be on hand to referee the event, for which tickets will cost $45.

So, which Florida Man will come out on top, and be crowned the king of all Florida Men? We'll have to wait and see...
