People think they’ve worked out where green laser that's thousands of miles long leads after mysteriously appearing in night sky

If you saw a bright green laser pointing into the sky, you would be forgiven for thinking the Avengers were about to descend upon your city

After spotting a green laser beaming into the sky, a lot of people were left scratching their heads - but some think they’ve worked out exactly what has been happening.

The night sky can be a beautiful thing and you might see something you don’t expect, like a shooting star or an aurora borealis, or quite possibly a massive green laser beaming into the clouds...

Now that is weird enough but the explanation some people have come to is even more bizarre.

Posting on Reddit, user Apenerd shared a picture of the great beam into the night sky on July 23. He didn’t explain at what time or what location he took the picture, however.

He captioned the post: “Every night this light/laser comes from out of nowhere and appears to be thousands of miles long.” The post so far has over 34,000 upvotes and has really got people talking.

He even claimed that he drove closer to the beams source and concluded it was none other than Leonardo DiCaprio to blame.

Why DiCaprio? Not a clue, did the Hollywood heartthrob have a massive party with loads of celeb at his California home in the last few hours? Not that we know of?

But people have seemed to have latched on to the idea and argued the actor is living his life closer to that of Jay Gatsby than he lets on.

Reddit user Apenerd added: “From driving closer and googling it I’ve come to the conclusion that it really is Leonardo DiCaprio’s event/party.

"When I got really close there were hundreds of black Mercedes vans filled with people dressed in glamorous clothes."

In response, one wrote: “Call the autobots bro. that's the allspark,” as another joked: “It is only supposed to be visible to woman under 25!”

Others also joked: “Man played Gatsby & went: "Why don't I do s**t like this?"

“I've played enough video games to know that if you follow that laser to its source, you will find a very rare material for forging some kind of legendary armor,” commented another.

But while many had the idea that the celeb was using the laser to guide his guests to the party rather than give an address (celebrities doing odd stuff isn’t exactly new), others argued it was likely tied to either scientists or NASA doing experiments in the region.

Last year, to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary, German laser manufacturer Trumpf shone a powerful laser into the sky in Germany that looked eerily similar.

NASA has also been known to conduct experiments using laser at night with their satellites actually beaming green lasers down towards Earth.

So, before you go down the bizarre celeb rabbit hole, probably better to consider that it is just scientists doing fun stuff with lasers.

UNILAD has contacted reps of DiCaprio for comment.
