A former flight attendant has explained why she advises passengers swerve hot drinks on planes.

'Digital creator' Kat Kamalani shared a video with her 847,000 TikTok followers in which she encouraged people to stick to sealed drinks when flying.

Sure, you run the risk of scolding your b******s if you've got a cup of coffee and hit a bit of turbulence, but Kat shared a slightly less obvious reason to stick to cold drinks.

    Watch here:

In the video - which has been viewed five million times - Kat said: "Rule number one - never consume any liquid that is not in a can or a bottle.

"The reason being is because those water tanks are never cleaned and they are disgusting.

"So talk to a fight attendant and we rarely, rarely drink the coffee or tea that comes from the same water tank, and so when you're drinking that coffee and tea it comes from that hot water, and it's absolutely disgusting."

She added that the machines used to make the coffees and teas are rarely cleaned unless they are broken; also, they are located just outside the toilets on the plane.

She added: "So pro tip for all you parents - never ask for hot water and put it in your baby's bottle.

"Ask for a bottle of water on the side and hot water in a cup. Then make your baby a bottle with the bottled water and put it in the cup and heat it up."

Unsurprisingly, a lot of people were pretty grossed out by her account of the lack of cleanliness on the planes she worked on, while others hoped her generalisation didn't apply to all airlines.

In a video posted last week, Kat shared five things she would never do on a plane as a former flight attendant - and surprise surprise, swerving hot drinks was one of them.

You might want to forgo caffeine on your next flight. Maybe just stick to booze?

In the video - viewed 4.5 million times - she said: "One - get on an aeroplane without snacks. You never know what's going to happen.

"Number two - I would not drink the hot water on the aeroplane."

She continued: "Number three - always obey the flight attendants and what they say.

"Number four... look up alternative airports around me, alternative flights and hotels, just in case anything happens.

"Number five - I would never divulge too much information, personal information, to someone who's sitting next to you and asking about your life."

Kat added in the caption 'don't walk around with your shoes off', but I for one will most definitely be ignoring that pointer.
