It's safe to say a big star like Robert Downey Jr. would have pretty easy access to a bald cap, but the star instead decided to fully commit by letting his kids shave his head.

The actor took to Instagram to share footage of the moment he enlisted his young barbers, interrupting them while they were sat carving pumpkins for Halloween.

Dressed head-to-toe in orange, Downey Jr. told his two children, Avri, seven, and Exton, 10, that he needed their help preparing for his upcoming role in The Sympathizer, where Exton pointed out that he plays 'like five roles or something'.

Not wanting to wear a bald cap for the job, Downey Jr. explained that he wanted his kids to shave his head for him. Needless to say, they didn't hesitate much before agreeing.

The family laid out a series of electric clippers and razors, with Avri grinning mischievously as she fired up one of the devices.

The kids then proceeded to take it in turns taking off chunks of the Iron Man star's recognisable hair, leaving him momentarily with a patchy scalp while dark hair covered the floor.

Once his smooth head was completely exposed, Downey Jr. asked his kids how much he 'owed' them for their time - but the kids decided to make the most of his bald head by incorporating it into their Halloween celebrations.

Explaining that she needed 'help with a Halloween project', the kids then gave Downey Jr. his latest role - pumpkin.

Cut to the dad, still dressed in orange, wearing a pumpkin stalk like a hat and turning round to reveal the back of his head painted to look like a smiling orange squash.

The footage has been met with delight from fans including Friends star Courteney Cox, who responded: "I wish you were my dad."

The actor shares his two younger children with his wife, Susan. He also has an older son, 29-year-old Indio, with his ex-wife Deborah Falconer.

Downey Jr.'s new project The Sympathizer is a TV adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name.

The book tells the story of the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy living during the final days of the Vietnam War before being exiled in the United States.

Alongside his video on Instagram, Downey Jr. wrote: "The things we do for our work… and our kids. #Sympathizer set ready."

The Sympathizer does not yet have a release date.
