Paris Hilton has opened up about having an abortion when she was in her twenties.

The socialite and her husband Carter Reum recently welcomed their first child, Phoenix, into the world.

The couple had their little boy through surrogacy, keeping the news close to their chest until his birth.

But now, speaking to Glamour UK, Hilton has opened up about the decision she took when she was much younger not to have a child.

In the aftermath of Roe v Wade being overturned, 42-year-old told the outlet that she simply 'wasn't ready' to be a mother at the time.

"This was also something that I didn’t want to talk about because there was so much shame around that," she said. "I was a kid and I was not ready for that."

She went on: "It’s a woman’s body… why should there be a law around that?

"It’s your body, your choice, and I really believe in that. It’s mind-boggling to me that they’re making laws about what you do with your reproductive health, because if it were the other way around with the guys, it would not be this way at all."

This comes after Hilton finally revealed the full name of her first child, Phoenix Barron Hilton Reum.

In a video on Instagram, Hilton explained the meaning behind the name in an excerpt from her upcoming memoir.

"We plan to name him Phoenix, a name that I decided years ago," she said.

"When I was searching cities, countries and states on a map, looking for something to go with Paris and London.

"Phoenix has a few good pop culture reference points, but more importantly it’s a bird that flames out and then rises from the ashes to fly again.

"I want my son to grow up knowing that triumph and disaster go around and come around throughout our lives, and that this should give us great hope for the future.

"Carter and I are so proud to welcome him into the world."

Speaking to People, the new mum explained that she and Carter had initially gone through IVF when the coronavirus pandemic kicked off.

"We started going and doing it like a few months in because the world was shut down," she recalled.

"We knew we wanted to start a family, and I was like, 'This is perfect timing. Usually, I'm on a plane 250 days out of the year, and let's just get all of the eggs stocked and ready', and we have tons of them just waiting."

In the end, however, they opted for surrogacy.

"It's always been my dream to be a mother and I'm so happy that Carter and I found each other," she said.

"We are so excited to start our family together and our hearts are exploding with love for our baby boy."
