If you've been wondering where Shelley Duvall is, she's right here.

The actress is best knowing for starring in films like The Shining, Roxanne, and The 4th Floor - all of which were released between 1970 and 2002.

While Duvall had worked in the movie industry for three decades, she mysteriously disappeared from Hollywood following her 2002 film, Manna from Heaven.

Nobody really knew why Duvall decided to all of a sudden retire from acting, but she's now spoken out about it.

In one of her first interviews in years, Duvall spoke to The New York Times about her exit from moviemaking and inferred that she was 'hurt' by the industry.

"I was a star; I had leading roles," she told the publication. "People think it’s just aging, but it’s not. It’s violence."

Expanding of her comments about 'violence', the 74-year-old went on: "How would you feel if people were really nice, and then, suddenly, on a dime, they turn on you? You would never believe it unless it happens to you. That’s why you get hurt, because you can’t really believe it’s true."

Duvall made a brief return to acting in 2023's The Forest Hills.

In the horror-thriller, the 74-year-old played Mama. She hasn't announced any other upcoming projects.

Duvall isn't alone in wanting to disappear from public life as fellow celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow have also expressed their desires to ditch stardom.

Discussing her plans of eventually selling her multi-million dollar healthcare company Goop, Paltrow said last year: "We’re not ready to sell yet. I need a few more years."

As to what she wants to do, she said she wants to 'literally disappear from public life'.

"No one will ever see me again,” she added.

Elsewhere, Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi wants to step away from filmmaking as he 'hates working'.

"A lot of people like to torture themselves in filmmaking," he's said previously. "They want to go and live in the snow and eat carcasses and live the experience. I don’t.

"I grew up super poor and I don’t want to do that again. I basically hate working and want to retire, but if I have to work, I’ll make it as pleasant as I can."

Elsewhere, in a similar situation to Duvall's, Bridget Fonda also ditched Hollywood in 2002 and was seldom seen afterwards.

Fonda bagged several roles in films and TV shows across the 80s and 90s, then stepped away from the spotlight in the early 00s.

The retired actress was seen out and about last year and when she was asked if she plans on returning to Hollywood, she simply replied 'no'.

"It's too nice being a civilian," Fonda added.
