People stunned as John Cena turns up naked on Oscars stage

John Cena stunned the audience at the Oscars with his announcement for the Best Costume Design.

The wrestler and actor did a bit with host Jimmy Kimmel about a streaker at the awards, before announcing the award 'naked'.

Take a look at the hilarious skit below:

Viewers were left in stitches at the bit, which saw Cena draped in a curtain as he announced the award.

The curtain was necessary, what with the envelope seemingly being the only thing protecting Cena's modesty.

Things got started as Kimmel made reference to an infamous incident in Oscars history.

At the 46th Academy Awards in 1974 a streaker called Robert Opel ran across the stage during the ceremony.

Kimmel then pointedly repeated a line about how crazy it would be if a streaker ran across the stage right now.

A sheepish Cena then could be seen appearing behind the set, or at least, his top half could.

The pair did a bit with Cena saying that they were going ahead with the bit as Cena feigned reluctance to do the joke.

Kimmel pointed out to Cena that he 'wrestles naked', with Cena responding that he actually wrestles in pants, to which Kimmel quipped that was 'worse'.

Eventually, Cena took to the stage revealing that he was completely 'naked', with just the envelope seeming to conceal his modesty.

After hesitating at the mic, Cena pointed out that he would not be able to open the envelope without exposing himself to the assembled audience, and everyone watching at home.

In a hilarious reference to the award for Best Costume Design, he also pointed out that costumes are very important, to laughs from the audience.

The show then cut away to the nominations for best costume design. These were Barbie, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, and Napoleon.

Ultimately the award went to Poor Things costume design, with costume designer Holly Waddington taking to the stage to accept the award.

Kimmel's hosting has already been the subject of controversy after he jabbed at Robert Downey Jr.

The comedian said: "This is the highest point of Robert Downey Jr's long and illustrious career. Well, one of the highest points."

Downey Jr. could be seen giving Kimmel a look which was clearly less than impressed, with some people joking that they were relieved he didn't emulate Will Smith after he slapped Chris Rock.
