Emma Stone has expressed regret over her joke about Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes last month following backlash from fans.

After a big win at the Golden Globes in January, Emma Stone was likely in high spirits, but some people still found a way to dampen the mood.

At the 81st Golden Globes Award, Stone was able to bag an award for her performance in film Poor Things.

Megastar Taylor Swift was up for an award herself but for her Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie in a new category honoring the year’s films for cinematic and box office achievement.

Swift unfortunately went home empty handed, but ended up cheering the loudest for her friend Stone when she won her award, which was noticed by reporters and fans alike.

After giving her acceptance speech, Stone took questions from journalists, with one asking her for her reaction to Swift’s loud support.

Stone’s response was clearly a joke but for many, it went right over their heads.

Stone slinked up to the microphone and quickly quipped: "What an a**hole am I, right?"

Cue raucous laughter from everyone in the audience.

The actor glides away again but then hops back on over to the podium to note she's known the singer for 'almost 20 years' and was 'very happy' Swift was there at the awards ceremony with her.

"She was also nominated tonight which was wonderful and... Yes, what an a**hole," Stone resolved.

You watch the clip and boom, it makes perfect sense - a joke between close friends.

Though some Swifties didn’t seem to get that and were quick to criticise the actress.

One user said: "Hilarious... Jk. Meh," while another added: "Guess Emma can't take a joke either."

Stone jokingly insulted Taylor Swift when taking a question from a reporter and faced some backlash.
Golden Globes

"It seems like she is calling Taylor Swift an a-hole. What a dumb response. Even if she was joking, it was a bad joke," another social media user commented.

Speaking to Variety earlier this week, Stone decided to address the backlash, saying: “I definitely won’t make a joke like that again, because I saw headlines that really pulled it out of context."

She then pointed at herself and said: "What a dope."

It's brilliant Stone can make a joke out of the issue, but it’s funnier how some people took offence to her calling her friend a name and simply not seeing the light side of it.
