The winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been announced after Donald Trump previously insisted he deserved to claim the award.

Trump has talked about the prize many times in recent months, and even touched on it during his first term in the White House. But noise surrounding Trump being considered has become louder in his second term, largely driven by the president himself.

During a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House in February, the Republican president said: "They will never give me a Nobel Peace Prize. I deserve it, but they will never give it to me."

Trump has said on several occasions his influence has been key in stopping multiple wars across the world.

"I've done six wars, I've ended six wars," the 79-year-old said in August during a summit with Ukrainian and European leaders. "If you look at the six deals I settled this year, they were all at war. I didn't do any ceasefires."

Despite his claims, Trump has been unsuccessful in his bid to claim the 2025 Noble Peace Prize, with the award instead going to María Corina Machado.

The Nobel Prize said on Twitter: "The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2025 #NobelPeacePrize to Maria Corina Machado for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."

Machado is a Venezuelan politician and industrial engineer who is currently opposition leader in her country, having served as an elected member of the National Assembly of Venezuela from 2011 to 2014. She will be awarded her prize at a ceremony on 10 December 2025 in Oslo, Norway.

This news comes after Trump announced that he expects Hamas to release all the remaining Israeli hostages on Monday (October 13), following a breakthrough on a peace deal.

Taking to Truth Social, Trump added that both Israel and Hamas had agreed to the 'first phase of our peace plan'.

He wrote: "I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan.

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace.

"All Parties will be treated fairly! This is a GREAT Day for the Arab and Muslim World, Israel, all surrounding Nations, and the United States of America, and we thank the mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, who worked with us to make this Historic and Unprecedented Event happen. BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS!"

Israel has began withdrawing from parts of Gaza, though eyewitnesses have told outlets including the BBC that they were strikes on Gaza overnight.

According to the BBC, the proposed 'initial withdrawal' as part of the 'peace plan' agreement would leave Gaza around 55 percent occupied, the second would then leave it about 40 percent occupied.

A final withdrawal phase should see a 'security buffer zone', which would leave roughly 15 percent of Gaza occupied by Israel.
