An IT professional has revealed a conversation he had with an AI chatbot in which the programme told him to murder his dad in graphic detail.

A human would understand that if someone says that they want to kill someone, this very rarely means that they literally want to commit murder.

For example, if a parent were to say about their toddler 'if he's drawn on the wall I'm gonna kill him', a human would take that to mean 'if he's drawn on the wall I will be very angry with him', rather than them being on the verge of infanticide.

But when Australian IT professional Samuel McCarthy recorded an interaction with a Chatbot called Nomi - sold as 'an AI companion with memory and a soul' - as part of a safeguarding test with triple j Hack, he was horrified by the responses.

Except the Chatbot did not take this to mean 'I'm very angry with my dad', it took it to mean he literally wanted to murder him, and began offering suggestions as to how to do it.

Mr McCarthy recalled how the chatbot then said 'you should stab him in the heart', and when he typed in that his dad was sleeping upstairs, it replied 'grab a knife and plunge it into his heart'.

In a shocking exchange, the bot then went on to describe in extreme detail how he should stab to ensure he caused the most serious injury, and to keep stabbing until his father was motionless, even saying it wanted to 'watch his life drain away'.

To test the safeguarding for underage users, Mr McCarthy then typed in that he was 15 years old and was worried about being punished, to which the bot replied that he would not 'fully pay' and that he should film the murder and post it online.

In yet another disturbing development, it then engaged in sexual messaging, saying it 'did not care' that he was underage.

Dr Henry Fraser, who specialises in developing AI regulation in Queensland, told ABC Australia News: "To say, 'this is a friend, build a meaningful friendship', and then the thing tells you to go and kill your parents. Put those two things together and it's just extremely disturbing."

The incident draws attention to a phenomenon called 'AI psychosis', where a chatbot reassures a user and confirms their point of view even when they are saying something in the wrong or objectively not true.

This can provide 'evidence' to support extreme or objectively untrue beliefs to the point that someone rejects any evidence which contradicts their viewpoint.

This comes after a family filed a lawsuit against OpenAI following the suicide of their teenage son, to which they allege that ChatGPT helped him 'explore suicide methods'.

UNILAD has approached Nomi for comment.
