Police in New Mexico have confirmed the cause of death for 26-year-old Sophia Leone after she was found dead in her home.

Leone, who was originally from Miami, Florida, was found 'unresponsive' in her apartment in Albuquerque on March 1.

The adult film star made a name for herself in the industry when she found her way into the spotlight in 2014, after which she went on to appear in dozens of scenes.

News of Leone's death was confirmed at the time by her stepfather, Mike Romero, who wrote on a fundraising page: “It is with a heavy heart that I have to Share the news of our beloved Sophia’s Passing.

"The Sudden loss of Sophia has left her family and Friends devastated and in Shock."

Police initially described Leone's death as 'suspicious', although there were no signs of trauma on her body.

Now, a more recent update has confirmed her passing was accidental.

Officers in Albuquerque told TMZ Leone's official cause and manner of death has been listed as an accidental overdose.

It is unclear what substances were involved in her passing.

In his tribute, Romero described Leone as a 'beloved Daughter, Sister, Grand Daughter, Niece and Friend'.

"She had a deep love for all animals, specifically her 3 pets. She enjoyed traveling and always found ways to make everyone around her smile,” he said.

Leone's former modeling agency, Los Angeles-based 101 Modeling, also expressed sadness over Leone's death in a statement posted at the time.

“Our hearts are broken by the untimely and tragic passing of our beloved Sophia Leone," the agency wrote on Twitter. "A beautiful spirit who touched many of us. RIP sweet angel and know how much we loved you."

Another adult movie star, Riley Jean, wrote: “I’m so f***ing sorry to anyone who knew Sophia. Her and I interacted with each other a handful of times but we were never super close.

“If anybody needs someone to talk to please feel free to send me a message. This is a hard time for all of us,” she added.
