Imagine one day opening your door to find police officers standing there, ready to tell you that your entire identity was a lie.
Would you feel shocked? In denial? Completely overwhelmed?
Well, that very situation became reality for Michelle Newton, now 46, who vanished from Kentucky as a three-year-old.
More than four decades later her mom Debra Newton has been arrested in connection with her disappearance.

Debra and Michelle lived in Louisville, Kentucky with Michelle's father Joseph Newton.
The family was planning a move to Georgia but in the spring of 1983, Debra up and left with toddler Michelle in tow.
Debra had informed Joseph she was 'relocating to Georgia' to begin a new job and 'prepare a new home for the family,' the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.
She initially kept in touch with Joseph via the phone but when he eventually arrived in Georgia, the pair were nowhere to be seen.

An investigation was launched and Debra was added to the FBI’s Top 8 Most Wanted parental-kidnapping fugitives.
The case was dismissed in 2000, however, because authorities couldn’t reach Joseph, reports CNN.
Five years later, now in her 20s, Michelle was removed from national missing-child databases when both her record and the warrant were recalled due to 'inaccurate information.'

But in 2016, a family member pushed for the case to be re-examined.
Now, both Debra and Michelle have been found.
Earlier this year, Michelle, who had been unknowingly living under a different identity, received that life-changing knock on her door.

She recalled what police had told her to WLKY: "You’re not who you think you are. You’re a missing person. You’re Michelle Marie Newton."
Chief Deputy Colonel Steve Healey added: “She told us she didn’t realize she was a victim until she saw everything she had missed."
What happened to mom Debra Newton?
In 2024, age-progressed photos of Michelle and Debra were released by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, showing what they could look like in the present day.

This sparked a Crimestoppers tip which helped authorities make a major breakthrough.
Earlier this year, they discovered mom Debra, now 66, was living in Marion County, Florida.
She had taken on a different name, going by Sharon instead - and that wasn't the only change.

Debra had built a whole new life, got remarried and retired to The Villages with her husband, Fox 35 reports.
DNA from Debra’s sister in Louisville showed a 99.9 percent match to 'Sharon', proving the woman in Florida was indeed Debra.
And so Debra was extradited to Kentucky, where she faces a custodial interference felony charge.

In Kentucky, there is no statute of limitations for such kidnapping offences - meaning no time limit on her being charged or tried for the crime.
Debra has pleaded not guilty to the charge, reports the Daily Mail, and is due back in court on January 23.
Michelle's family reunion

Upon learning her true identity, Michelle reached out to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
This call led to an emotional reunion with family members she hadn’t seen in decades, including her father Joseph.
Speaking to WLKY, Joseph said he 'can't explain' the incredible moment of 'walking in and getting to put my arms back around my daughter'.
“I wouldn’t trade that moment for anything," he added. "It was just like seeing her when she was first born. It was like an angel.”

In the meantime, Michelle told the news outlet that she is standing by both parents through whatever happens next.
"My intention is to support them both through this and try to navigate and help them both wrap it up so that we can all heal, and hopefully there's just apologies and [we could] start healing," she said.
